Practicing Resilient Solarities
The transition to renewable energy is predominantly presented as a crucial solution to tackle global climate change. In the Global South, this transition often takes the form of neocolonialism and neoextractivism that perpetuate social inequalities. Through the lens of solarities and energy humanities approaches, this article analyzes how the Brazilian anthology Solarpunk: Ecological and Fantastical Stories in a Sustainable World (2017) and the c…
Planetary health from below: Multispecies health collectives in the environmental aesthetics of contagion and chemical solutions
As ecological tipping points are rapidly being surpassed, planetary health is a new paradigm that connects the impacts of planetary change to questions of health, with a specific focus on human health. This essay argues that Michel Nieva’s climate fiction, Dengue Boy, employs a tropicalised environmental aesthetic that can challenge the human-centred perspective of the planetary health paradigm by highlighting a multispecies health collective ami…

Energy sovereignty storytelling: Art practices, community-led transitions, and territorial futures in Latin America
In this article, we study forms of storytelling about energy sovereignty retrieved from community-based art and their implications for energy justice formulations in Latin America. Based on the visual and discursive analysis of five contemporary Latin American artistic practices, the article shows that their poetic and political engagements with energy production, consumption, and distribution build what we call “energy sovereignty storytelling.”…
Reclaiming Energy Flows: Energy GeoHumanities and the Socio-Ecologies of Rivers in Latin American Hydro-Modernities
This article explores fluvial forms of art and activism to reclaim new meanings of energy at a time when questions about the energy transition are central in geography studies and global environmental discourses. Departing from Serpent River Book by Carolina Caycedo, we propose affective, embodied, and creative entanglements to understand energy flows in river ecologies in Latin America for an exploration of energy geohumanities. We then discuss …
Technologies to embrace the sun: Solarpunk-based project as an exploration for a just energy transition
The national implementation of electricity generation projects directly threatens the livelihoods of local and Indigenous communities in Latin America. Therefore, it is crucial to search for solutions to energy supply considering local needs and cosmologies. This article focuses on micro-energy production in rural settlements on the Colombian Caribbean coast. The aim is to provide insights into the relationship between energy, technology, and anc…

Inviting a decolonial praxis for future imaginaries of nature: Introducing the Entangled Time Tree
The practice of envisioning the future has deep roots in the past. Across the continent of Africa, there are traditions of oral storytelling, griots, folklore, and indigenous speculation that offer guidance on how to live in the present and orient towards better futures. Whilst these traditions can act as navigational compasses, they are not prevalent in conventional futuring methodologies. Rather, we are surrounded by perspectives of thinking ab…
Equity and Justice should underpin the discourse on Tipping Points
Radical and quick transformations towards sustainability have winners and losers, with equity and justice embedded to a greater or a lesser extent. According to research, only the wealthiest 1-4 % of the global population will radically need to change their consumption, behaviours, societal values and beliefs in order to make space for an equitable and sustainable future for nature and people. However, narratives around many 'positive' tipping po…
Vernacular Sustainabilities—Multispecies Stories and Life-Death Entanglements of the Sertão Nordestino in Contemporary Brazilian Futurisms (The Film Bacurau and the Sertãopunk Comic Cangaço Overdrive)
In northeastern Brazil, a region with extreme droughts and the smallest rainfall index in the whole country, water sources are crucial to ensure the survival of humans and nonhumans in this semi-arid region, known as sertão nordestino. Since the mid-twentieth century, classical cultural expressions focusing on this area have emphasized poverty in a desert of dry vegetation. Unlike romanticized portrayals of the backland in the 1990s, contemporary…
Sites of Situated Hope: Amazonian Rhythms, Unruly Caribbean Plants, and Post-Anthropocentric Gazes in Contemporary Latin American Cinema
This article examines the ways in which the cinematic practices of the audiovisual productions Farmacopea (2013) by Beatriz Santiago Muñoz (Puerto Rico) and Río Verde (2017) by Diego and Álvaro Sarmiento (Peru) address human-nature assemblages by articulating a post-anthropocentric gaze. Addressing these two movies as neoregional films, this essay discusses how these contemporary audiovisual productions explore the disastrous environmental histor…
Umbrales del hedor: Diálogos geoculturales entre la poesía de Teresa Orbegoso y la filosofía americanista de Rodolfo Kusch
The poetry of Peruvian writer Teresa Orbegoso interweaves Andean epistemologies and precarious materials in a land writing that is both geographical and cultural, and which is inspired in Rodolfo Kusch’ Americanist philosophy. Although the Kuschean philosophy, collected in his Obras completas, has received scarce attention within the field of ecocriticism, it has been described by Eduardo Gudynas (2010) as the precursor of ecophilosophical though…

Mitochondrial DNA haplogroup diversity in Basques: A reassessment based on HVI and HVII polymorphisms
This study provides a more complete characterization of the mitochondrial genome variability of the Basques, including data on the hypervariable segment HVII of the D‐loop region, which remains relatively unknown. To that end, genomic DNA from 55 healthy men living in the Arratia Valley (Biscay province) and the Goiherri region (Guipúzcoa province) was examined by direct sequencing. Three‐generation pedigree charts were compiled to ensure the col…
