Advancing feminist innovation in sport studies: A transdisciplinary dialogue on gender, health and wellbeing
Athlete health and wellbeing requires a holistic, multidimensional approach to understanding, supporting, and treating individual athletes. Building more supportive, inclusive, and equitable environments for the health and wellbeing of women and gender expansive people further requires gender-responsive approaches that promote broader cultural change. Feminist sport and exercise medicine practitioners, sports scientists, and social science resear…
Talking back: Trans youth and resilience in action
In 2015 the Gender Vectors research team received a major research grant to conduct research with and about transgender youth in the Greater Vancouver Area. A unique aspect of this research project involved combining social action research with the development of a prototype of a video game as a knowledge translation tool to depict the life experiences of trans youth. We draw on transformative gender justice theory to document and address the dim…
The Trans Generation: How Trans Kids (and Their Parents) are Creating a Gender Revolution
“Compassionate and pragmatic, this is the book about trans kids that every parent, teacher, coach, caregiver, and policymaker needs to read!” Heath Fogg Davis, author of Beyond Trans: Does Gender Matter? “The Trans Generation is indispensable reading for anybody who wants to understand the gender climate-change our culture is currently experiencing. If you care about a kid who does gender differently...and want them to have the best future possib…
Transgender Athletes in Competitive Sport
The Sochi Olympics, Celebration Capitalism, and Homonationalist Pride
In July 2013, the Russian government passed two anti-LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) laws that drew international criticism. Russia's impending hosting of the 2014 Winter Olympic Games inspired more sustained international attention to these laws than might have otherwise been the case. In this article, we apply the mutually supporting frameworks of queer/trans necropolitics and celebration capitalism to a content analysis of cover…
Fighting for Trans* Kids: Academic Parent Activism in the 21st Century
In this article we explore some of the affective and ethical dimensions that we have faced as parent academic-activists seeking to understand and undo some of the structural transphobia that currently exists in Canadian society. Informed by critical feminist, critical race and black feminist thought, trans* scholarship, queer theory, and anti-oppression analysis, we discuss how our academic-activism assumes complex configurations of privilege and…
Sports
This section includes eighty-six short original essays commissioned for the inaugural issue of TSQ: Transgender Studies Quarterly. Written by emerging academics, community-based writers, and senior scholars, each essay in this special issue, "Postposttranssexual: Key Concepts for a Twenty-First-Century Transgender Studies," revolves around a particular keyword or concept. Some contributions focus on a concept central to transgender studies; other…
Transformative Sporting Visions
In this introduction to this special issue on Transformative Visions of Sport I draw attention to the tension critical sport studies scholars are likely to experience between the attention they draw to the role of sport in perpetuating and normalizing various injustices and their own passion for particular sports. It is no accident that most critical sport studies scholars are also huge fans of various competitions/games, and, indeed, I would arg…
Thinking the Unthinkable: Imagining an “Un-American,” Girl-friendly, Women- and Trans-Inclusive Alternative for Baseball
The purpose of this article is twofold: to capture the injustice inherent in the gendered bifurcation of baseball and softball via the prism of critical feminist sport studies; and to begin to imagine a girl-friendly/women-and trans-inclusive future for baseball that is less fertile for cooptation into post-911 United States security state discourses. In this article I link the 'unthinkability' of the occupational segregation of baseball in North…
Transgender inclusion and the changing face of lesbian softball leagues
This article examines the re-negotiation of sex-based boundaries within the context of transgender/transsexual inclusion in North American lesbian softball leagues. Semi-structured interviews with transgender participants combined with participant observation have been undertaken. We focus on the 'climate' ( Hall and Sandler, 1982 ) for transgender participation in lesbian softball leagues that have adopted radical (non sex-binary-based) transinc…
Women's Ski Jumping, the 2010 Olympic Games, and the Deafening Silence of Sex Segregation, Whiteness, and Wealth
Citing section 15(1) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, 15 women's ski jumpers took the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) to court over the exclusion of a women's ski jumping event. In this analysis of the initial court case and subsequent appeal, I demonstrate that Canadian (and western) citizenship was contested in this legal battle and that gendered, raced, and classed dimensio…
The Sport Nexus and Gender Injustice
Male-dominated and sex segregated elite professional and amateur sport1 in North America constitutes a "sport nexus" (Burstyn, 1999; Heywood & Dworkin, 2003) that combines economic and cultural influence to reinforce and perpetuate gender injustice. The sport nexus is an androcentric sex-segregated commercially powerful set of institutions that is highly visible and at the same time almost completely taken for granted to the extent that its anti-…
Queering Sport: Lesbian Softball Leagues and the Transgender Challenge
This article introduces a distinction between gender conforming and gender transforming elements in the transgender liberation movement and explores the way in which lesbian softball leagues have responded to these challenges. The transgender inclusive policies of a sample of North American lesbian softball leagues are examined within the context of a queer feminist challenge to the gender binary and the role of sport in normalizing the two sex s…
Parallel Subaltern Feminist Counterpublics in Cyberspace
The historically exclusive nature of public spaces and discourses is beyond dispute. While feminist and 'other' counterpublics have provided alternative ways of organizing public interaction and dialogue, these have remained largely invisible to nonparticipants. New information technologies afford new possibilities for feminist counterpublics to influence the norms of participation and boundaries between insiders and outsiders in mainstream publi…
