  • I just saw the alcohol brand, I never really thought of the zeros”

Open Access•Richard Purves, Jack G Martin et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

Alcohol companies frequently use sports sponsorship to maintain high visibility, even in jurisdictions with advertising restrictions. Strategies such as alibi marketing - using brand-associated slogans, colours, or fonts in place of explicit brand names, and NoLo marketing - promoting zero-alcohol variants of core brands, enable continued brand exposure. This study investigates young people's awareness of alcohol sponsorship and their perceptions…

Findings of the present study are consistent with earlier literature examining gambling careers before the advent of COVID-19 showing that gambling trajectories are non-linear. Findings highlight the adaptability…

Open Access•Martine Miller, F Clark Howell et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Young people’s engagement in gambling can be linked to gambling-related harm. This can cause stress, anxiety, relationship issues, debt, and lost opportunities. There is a lack of independently funded, and evidence-based school-based interventions that seek to prevent and reduce the harms associated with gambling. PRoGRAM-A is one of the first independently research funded interventions to prevent gambling related harm in adolescents. This paper …

  • Attending sporting mega events during Covid-19

Open Access•Richard Purves, Jordan Maclean et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2023

The UEFA EURO 2020 football tournament was one of the largest Sporting Mega Events (SMEs) to take place during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mitigating the risk of virus transmission requires a multi-layered approach for any large event, more so in this case due to staging the tournament across eleven host countries. Yet, little is known about COVID-19 risks and mitigation from attending an event of this scale and nature. We examined the implementation …

We conducted semi-structured interviews in-store with 20 small retailers in central Scotland at two time points: October – …

However, any discussion regarding changes to the law regarding alcohol at football stadia, including potential pilot schemes, should be evaluated and monitored in terms of both financial impact and the impact on public health and safety

This protocol describes a study addressing the following three ques…
