  • The origins and dispersal throughout the Pacific islands of fehi bananas (Musa series Australimusa)

    Lex A J Thomson, Jean-François Butaud et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2022

Fehi bananas are a Pacific Islands and eastern Indonesian assemblage of parthenocarpic diploid and triploid cultivars in Musa series Australimusa. Fehi cultivars were derived principally from M. maclayi, M. lolodensis and M. bukensiss.l. and related entities. Eleven Fehi cultivar groups comprising morphologically similar cultivars are described, along with naturalised forms from eastern Polynesia. Fehi cultivars have been referred to particular s…

  • Hawaiian seascapes and landscapes

Lex A J Thomson, Paul Geraghty et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2020

Kaute and its derivatives koute, ʻoute and ʻaute are Polynesian names for a red-flowered Hibiscus. Since its first botanical collection on Tahiti by Banks and Solander (1769), this hibiscus has been referred to as H. rosa-sinensis L. and assumed to have been introduced by the bearers of the archaeological culture known as Lapita. Lapita people settled West Polynesia around 2800 BP and spoke a language derived from Proto-Oceanic, the common ancest…

  • The Northern Outliers–East Polynesian Hypothesis expanded

    Open Access•William H Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2018

The linguistics-based Northern Outliers–East Polynesian (NO-EPn) Hypothesis contrasts with the commonly held view that East Polynesia was settled from the Tonga-Sāmoa region. It proposes the Northern Outliers, especially the Central Northern Outliers, to be the homeland from which East Polynesia was settled. Added here to the three nested subgroups of the NO-EPn linguistic tree is a new Southeast Solomons Outlier–East Polynesian subgroup encompas…

  • The Sociopolitical Context of Establishing Hawaiian-medium Education

    William H Wilson•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•1998•Citada por: 6

The Hawaiian language revitalisation effort is the most developed of any indigenous language revitalisation in the United States. The language has a unique status as the single indigenous language of the state and a history as an administrative language spoken by all ethnic groups during the time of the independent Kingdom of Hawai'i. During the past fifteen years, Hawaiian language revitalisation has centred around establishing indigenous medium…

The effects of initial level of meaningfulness of CS on acquisition of new meaning was studied. Three groups of 10 children each were trained to associate words of positive, negative, or neutral evaluative meaning with nonsense syllables. Meaningfulness of the CS (low, middle, or high) was a between-groups variable. Research in verbal learning has shown that initial level of associative meaning influences the rate of learning of new materials.
