  • Andalusian Muwaššaḥ Poetry

Alan Jones•ARTICLE•The Arabist Budapest Studies in…•2026

This article, published posthumously, re-examines the origins, structure, and development of Andalusian muwaššaḥ poetry through a close reading of the surviving corpus and the medieval critical tradition. By analysing stanzaic structure, metre, rhyme, and the relationship between poetic composition and musical performance, the study argues for a more precise understanding of the formal evolution of the genre. Particular attention is given to the …

  • Samuel Miklos Stern and Andalusian poetry

    Open Access•Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Jewish Studies•2021

Samuel Miklos Stern (SMS) was the pioneer of the modern study of both Arabic and Hebrew muwashshaḥāt (a genre of stanzaic lyric poetry). This paper gives an overview of Stern’s ground-breaking contributions to the study of Andalusian poetry, from his entry into the subject while a student at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, through his field-shaping articles in the journal al-Andalus, to his remarkable paper on “Literary Connections between th…

  • Exploring the solution space for different forestry management structures in New Zealand under climate change

    Open Access•Anita Wreford, Andrew Dunningham et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2021•References: 7

The concept of “solution spaces” is used to explore the potential future of forestry under climate change for different types of forestry management structures. We base the analysis in New Zealand, where forestry plays an increasingly critical role in the nation’s climate policy, but the concept could be applied to any region. Understanding solution spaces and the ways in which they can be influenced at different levels of ownership is a critical…

  • The Many Dimensions of a Kuni Folktale

    Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Anthropos•2019

Engaging with a superficially simple folktale from the Kuni of Papua New Guinea, I identify a number of far-flung and quasi-universal themes as well as some widely distributed Melanesian ones. I suggest the main function of the etiological folktale is to obviate aspects of everyday existence, then to restore and reaffirm them. I attribute the grip of etiological tales, more generally, to a human drive for explanation. An added attraction for the …

  • Disparate dimensions of a Mekeo socio‐moral order: Values, emotions and dispositions in language, discourse and practice

    Open Access•Alan Jones•ARTICLE•The Australian Journal of…•2015•References: 12

Terms for affective constructs and references to social ideals proliferate in the ethnography of the Mekeo, but these are often inconsistently defined and treated in isolation. I here attempt to produce a more coherent account of relevant terms and, ultimately, a systematic representation of the ontologically disparate elements that combined to produce a viable socio‐moral order in twentieth‐century Mekeo village society. The exercise reveals une…

  • Discursive struggle and contested signifiers in the arenas of education policy and work skills in Japan

    David Rear, Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Critical Policy Studies•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 31

This article critically examines discourses of education policy and work skills in twenty-first century Japan. Conducting a close analysis of texts produced by the Ministry of Education (MEXT) and the Japan Business Federation, it combines analytical constructs from the Discourse Theory of Laclau and Mouffe with those from Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to identify two distinct discourses currently engaged in a struggle for hegemony: a discour…

  • Mythic origins of moral evil: Moral fatalism and the tragic self-conception of the Mekeo

    Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 15

The author documents and interprets versions of key Mekeo myths that tell of the origins of moral evil, suggesting that, where such myths exist, they may be seen as evidence of an evolving moral consciousness in which subjective awareness of guilt begins to displace feelings of shame and loss of face. He identifies the components of a complex socio-moral order with two distinct types of moral behaviour, a semi-institutionalised anti-morality, and…

  • Mekeo Chiefs and Sorcerers: Metaphor, Ideology and Practice

    Open Access•Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Oceania•2007

This paper evaluates two English expressions used by Michelle Stephen to translate the Mekeo terms lopia and ungaunga , traditionally rendered as “chief” (or “peace chief”) and “sorcerer” (Seligman 1910; Hau'ofa 1971, 1981; Mosko 1985). Stephen suggests that more “literal” translations are “man of kindness” and “man of sorrow”. I argue that the expressions proposed are only literal if we accept postulated etymologies based on Stephen's reading of…

A set of biographical data was collected for a sample of 420 Royal Naval officers in training. Different scoring keys were developed for four training criteria, using England's (1971) Weighted Application Blank technique, and cross‐validated on a further sample of 282 officers. Appropriately weighted biodata predicted one of the training performance criteria almost as well as the composite score of four psychometric tests of aptitude, and as the …

The limiting effects of exemptions to the coverage of child restraint laws were estimated by determining the extent to which the laws would have applied to child motor vehicle occupants, ages 0-5 years, killed before the laws were passed (1976-80). The 50 state laws would have exempted about 39 per cent of child motor vehicle occupants less than 6 years of age killed in the years immediately preceding enactment of the laws. Open Access•Janet Wingrove, Alan Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1985

The predictive validities of pre‐ and post‐discussion assessment centre ratings of suitability for initial training as a Naval Officer were compared. The criterion measures were assessments of technical knowledge and officer qualities made on the completion of training. No differences in validity were observed, even for cases where the discussion resulted in more change or where assessors initially disagreed. The value of the discussion procedure…

  • Rationality and Policy-Making in Higher Education: The Case of the National Advisory Body

    Alan Jones•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•1985•Cited by: 1

There is now a substantial literature on the concept of rational decisionmaking and a number of studies concerned with the application of rationality to particular cases and areas. The basis of the rational model of policy-making is that it involves the selection of alternatives which lead to the achievement of previously designated goals, and that the process is characterised by search and evaluation. • A study of pre‐assessment centre candidate short‐listing

    Open Access•Alan Jones, Alan G Jones•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1984

A trial was made of a brief short‐listing procedure, the aim of which was to identify applicants who were unlikely to be successful at a military assessment centre and whose attendance might therefore not be cost effective. Assessments of overall suitability, based on short interviews at a number of locations, correlated 0***.45 ( n = 65) with assessment centre outcome. A subsequent headquarters reassessment, which included some further informati…

  • Prediction of performance in initial Officer training using reference reports

Open Access•Alan Jones, Elizabeth Harrison•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Psychology•1982

The usefulness of reference reports has tended to be neglected in personnel selection research, and available evidence is not encouraging. In the study reported, ratings on the headteacher's report form used in Royal Navy Officer selection were examined and compared with training performance. Although the ratings of candidates ( n = 263) were subject to restriction of range and possible leniency effects, amongst entrants ( n = 103) a total score …
