Atché (Sumatra)
Atché (Sumatra) Xavier Brau de Saint-Pol Lias Translated by Colin Dyer ________ A few months ago, I was on the west coast of Atché1 on board the Siak, a gunboat in the Dutch Colonial Navy on which I was enjoying a cordial reception. I was waiting for the tide to allow our boat to go ashore on that very difficult madreporic coast of the Indian Ocean. While waiting, I tried to spend the time usefully, and asked the numerous local chiefs on board ab…

This is the first English translation of the day-by-day accounts of French explorers Hyacinthe de Bougainville and Auguste Vaillant who rounded Cape Horn in 1826 and 1836 respectively, but in different directions and seasons. Polynesians in the cross-fire: The Hawaiians caught between French captain Abel Du Petit-Thouars and American missionary Hiram Bingham, Honolulu, 1837
During the first half of the 19th century the Polynesian rulers in the Hawaiian Islands were increasingly caught between the French and the Americans, as these two nations vied with intensifying hostility to gain support for their religious and commercial interests. The French on one occasion demanded a "guarantee" of 20,000 piastres, then took a Hawaiian notable as hostage, and later invaded Honolulu. In the early 1850s, however, French interest…
The Aboriginal people in Sydney as seen by Eugène Delessert, December 1844 to August 1845
Eugene Delessert was born in Le Havre, a sea-port in northern France, in 1819. He was thus only 25 years of age when he arrived in Sydney in late December 1844... Delessert stayed in Sydney for nearly eight months (departing on 15 August 1845), and it is the part of his journal describing the Aboriginal people (pages 127 to 151 of his original French) that is translated

Examination of social security and medical insurance provision shows how social welfare benefits have become more or less vital in the French family's maintenance of improved living standards. It is concluded that French social security services now compare favourably with provisions in other countries, but that birt…
