"Performing cultural heritage with tīfaifai, Tahitian "quilts
Tīfaifai, the visually striking piecework and appliqué textiles (sometimes referred to as quilts) that islanders of Tahiti and other locations in French Polynesia have created for over 150 years, are increasingly part of a public cultural heritage discourse. Focusing on appliqué tīfaifai, the most popular form in the Society Islands for many decades, I examine the contemporary role of tīfaifai in conveying messages of cultural heritage in public …

Existential and object authenticity in Southwestern pottery
A much discussed concept, authenticity is still very important to collectors and museums in 2013 with respect to Native American art, but few have examined the dynamic between artist and buyer in relation to how concepts of authenticity affect the exchange. Useful here is a constructivist approach that examines authenticity with respect to local perceptions, values and setting. Existential authenticity is revealed through statements by the potter…

Interrogating Cultural Anthropology Text Covers
The cover image on an assigned text is often the first message American students receive about cultural anthropology. Drawing upon 47 introductory texts published between 2001 and 2007, our team of students and professor employed content, semiotic, and critical discourse analysis, as well as student focus groups and student survey information, to discover messages projected to and received by students. We discuss our findings in terms of pedagogy…

Photography and ambivalence
Although scant attention has been devoted to the anthropological ‘crisis in representation’ of creating still images as part of anthropological research, several contemporary women anthropologists have written of their misgivings. In this paper, I examine the ideas and photographic practices of Ruth Behar, Lila Abu‐Lughod, Serena Nanda, Barbara Tedlock, Kristen Hastrup and Nancy Scheper‐Hughes, all of whom hold ambivalent attitudes toward photogr…

Telling a Tale
In 1925 Margaret Mead spent 10 days in High Chief Ufuti's household in the village of Vaitogi, Tutuila, before sailing to Ta'u where she conducted most of her research on Samoan adolescence. In Vaitogi, Mead took many photographs of Fa'amotu, Ufuti's t # upou daughter, several of which appeared in Coming of Age in Samoa . This article examines a number of intertwined issues of visual representation which may have prompted Mead to use a disproport…
Difference and the I/Eye of the Beholder
Drawing from and modifying elements of visual travelogues, Ellen Spiro's 1993 film Greetings from Out Here and Renee Tajima-Peña's 1996 film My America ( or honk if you love Buddha) explore contemporary Southern gay and Asian-American lives from minority perspectives. In this article I examine the extent to which the filmmakers use travelogue conventions to draw viewers into a trip of discovery about other Americans. I discuss the filmmakers' sta…
Photography, tourism and the Kodak hula show
The sixty‐four year old Kodak Hula Show1 is one of the oldest staged tourist performances in the world. Created for the benefit of tourists wishing to take pictures of hula dancers, the event has always promoted photography as a naturalized, integral part of the tourist experience. The show and the tourists’ photography complement one another in establishing and reinforcing Eastman Kodak's, tourists’ and performers’ goals. Performers’ ideology, K…
Photography and the “natives
Although most introductory anthropology textbooks are filled with photographic images, a reflexive discussion of the purpose of placing photographs within the books is lacking. Since texts' images are a powerful and pervasive means of communication, anthropologists and students alike need to critically examine messages that the photographs and their captions may convey. In this article, I examine two genres of textbook photographs that can elucid…
Making a Spectacle of Herself
The now-famous photograph of singer k.d. lang and model Cindy Crawford on the cover of the August 1993 Vanity Fair magazine was notable for being one of the first images in popular culture to feature a self-identified lesbian in an image with lesbian thematic content. This paper explores Vanity Fair's cover in terms of lesbian visibility issues, different interpretive strategies for constructing meaning, and the use of lesbian/gay symbology and a…

Visualizing themselves
This paper examines the process and product of video visualizations made by and for Tongan immigrants in Salt Lake City, Utah. Videographers and other members of the Tongan community collaborate on videos of events such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, and fund‐raising dances. Through video recording, editing, and viewing processes, they have many opportunities to create images of themselves within American society. The videos, prized among Utah…
Polynesian Women and Tifaifai Fabrications of Identity
Women of Polynesia utilize the reintegrated art form of tifaifai to express their complex and multifaceted identities. Through their work patterns, aesthetic decisions, and designated uses for tifaifai, women create and reflect diverse and overlapping roles such as those associated with kinship relations, regional identities, religious affiliations, and gender expectations
