An exploratory survey method for archaeoastronomy, applied to standing stones at the hauviri and taputapuātea maraes, Ra'iātea
Polynesia has a vast area, and surveys are few and unsystematic. Rapid, low-cost and personnel surveys are needed to identify cases that merit an in-depth treatment. Precession issues in Polynesian archaeoastronomy
Latitude and azimuth determination were crucial for Polynesian navigators, \nsupplemented by techniques such as observations of swells, birds and expanded \nlandfalls. Longitude could only be determined by dead reckoning. Both latitude and \nazimuth made extensive use of stars, which alter gradually over the centuries due to \nprecession, the movement in the Earth’s axis of spin. This article looks at ways in which communal area right holders in Zimbabwe attempt to add security to their land rights when faced with altered circumstances. Apart from quasi-legal means such as ad hoc diagrams, which were beyond the scope of this article, two principal strands were found by which land right security is bolstered. This article argues that the fact that most people feel that they have always been "the same person" represents an intrinsic phenomenon of subjective experience in introspection and consciousness in life (it is not just a peculiarity of the memory of the human species as it appears from an "objective" point of view).
