  • Sacred offerings and secular foods on Reao Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago, East Polynesia

Open Access•Marshall I Weisler, Marshall Weisler et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•2024

In 1976, Yosihiko H. Sinoto conducted extensive archaeological survey and excavations on Reao Atoll, Tuamotu Archipelago as part of a Japanese, multi‐disciplinary expedition led by Prof. Sachiko Hatanaka. Primarily excavating three marae and four habitation sites totalling ∼180 m 2 , more than 25000 vertebrate remains were recovered. We report the jidentification and analysis of the fauna and contrast the inventories from secular and sacred conte…

  • Refining the Society Islands cultural sequence: Colonization phase and developmental phase coastal occupation on Moʻorea Island

    J G Kahn, Yosihiko Sinoto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the Polynesian Society•2017•Cited by: 10•References: 10

The Society Islands are critical to chronology building in East Polynesia, as the archipelago served as a potential first landfall for voyagers moving out of the West Polynesia homeland. Yet determining the particulars of migration sequences and settlement chronology in the Society Islands, like the rest of East Polynesia, has been challenging. Here, we report on a dating and re-dating program of four coastal sites on the island of Mo'orea, Windw…

  • Settlement Chronologies and Shifting Resource Exploitation in Ka‘ū District, Hawaiian Islands

    J G Kahn, Steven P Lundblad et al.•ARTICLE•Asian perspectives•2016

Museum collections contribute valuable information for cultural heritage, biological conservation, and the application of innovative and new methodological approaches. Collections deriving from archaeological projects in Hawai‘i serve as a case in point. Here, we report on re-analysis of two Ka‘ū District collections from Hawai‘i Island (HA-B22-64 and -248) to demonstrate what can be learned when applying new research questions to old collections…

  • Geochemical and petrographic evidence for adze production at Pu'u Pāpa'i, East Moloka'i, Hawai'i

  • Japanese Jomon sherds in artifact collections from Mele Plain on Efate in Vanuatu

    Open Access•William R Dickinson, Yosihiko H Sinoto et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology in Oceania/Archæology…•1999•Cited by: 5•References: 11

Fourteen cord‐marked sherds collected from the surface of yam gardens on Mele Plain near Port Vila on the island of Efate in Vanuatu are unlike any known prehistoric wares from Pacific islands. Based on typological analysis, comparative petrographic study of sand tempers supplemented by microprobe analysis of characteristic microperlite sand grains, and thermolumescence dating of key examples, we believe these sherds were made during the Early Jo…

  • Temper Sands in Exotic Marquesan Pottery and the Significance of Their Fijian Origin

William R Dickinson, Barry V Rolett et al.•ARTICLE•Journal de la Société des…•1998•Cited by: 3

Petrographic restudy of quartzose temper sands in potsherds recovered by Suggs and Sinoto from the Ha'atuatua archaeological site on Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands confirms a previous tentative inference that they represent wares manufactured on the Rewa Delta of Viti Levu in Fiji. Temper sands in the exotic Ha'atuatua sherds and in prehistoric sherds excavated from the Nasilai site on the Rewa Delta are closely comparable, both qualitatively…

  • An analysis of Polynesian migrations based on the archaeological assessments

  • Report on the preliminary excavation of an early habitation site on Huahine, Society Islands
