Psychoanaliza i utopia
There are parallels between three movements that blossomed during the first decades of the twentieth century: Marxism, Zionism and psychoanalysis. Utopian elements were present in all three, expressing a deep commitment to improving human life, but also aspects of denial and illusion that led to more complex results than initially expected. Rescue fantasies played a role in these movements, implying omnipotence, self-idealization and the demoniza…
An Inclusive Psychoanalyst: Sidney Blatt’s Contribution In Perspective
Sidney Blatt personified in many ways the striving toward an inclusive, broad-minded, nonsectarian, and nondogmatic psychoanalysis. Intrigued and inspired by many trends in psychoanalytic thought and neighboring disciplines, he believed deeply in the coexistence and mutual contributions of a psychoanalytic clinical practice and of systematic empirical research on development and its disruptions, evolving personality traits, and the ways psychoana…
On “Polygamous Analysis”

Call of the Wild
Sándor, Gizella, Elma: A biographical journey
In recent years, particularly with the publication of the Freud-Ferenczi correspondence, it has become clear that the rich theoretical dialogue between Freud and Ferenczi, a dialogue that may be seen as constitutive for psychoanalytic discourse in recent decades, was intensely intertwined with their complex personal relationship. Two women--Gizella Pálos, who eventually became Ferenczi's wife, and her daughter Elma, who was both Ferenczi's and Fr…
Impossible Training: A Relational View of Psychoanalytic Education (Relational Perspectives Book Series)
Israeli psychotherapists and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict
This paper discusses the positions taken by Israeli analysts and therapists vis-à-vis the Israeli–Palestinian conflict and Israeli-Arab relations, in the context of their attitude to political and social issues. The history of this topic is traced for the past few decades and attention is paid to the influence of the conflict on actual analytic and therapeutic processes, to the dilemmas posed by analysts' open expression of political views, and t…
Reader and story, viewer and film: On transference and interpretation
Two sides in Freud's attitude towards literature and art are presented: Freud the sensitive listener, whose interest in art is a potential springboard for a rich interdisciplinary dialogue; and Freud the conquistador, whose wish for power in 'invaded' territories is related to troublesome aspects of 'pathography' and 'applied analysis'. The unique contribution of psychoanalysis may not be discovering objectively the true unconscious content of wo…
Ferenczi, Rescue, and Utopia
My interest in the paradoxical place of rescue fantasies in the vocational motivation and countertransference of analysts and therapists (1997), and in the way these fantasies can become a springboard for utopian wishes to rescue humanity (1993), has led me to contemplate the relevance of this topic for our understanding of Ferenczi's work and its impact today (1996; 1999). The history of thinking about rescue fantasies teaches us something about…

Psychoanalysis and Life
The relevance of analytic work for people’s actual lives is a vital issue. The formation of analytic goals requires a negotiation process between analyst and analysand, a negotiation influenced by the inherent conflictuality of goals for each partner, and colored by the dialectics of goals and goallessness. As a potential contribution to such negotiation, the author emphasizes the fuller understanding and evolution of self-other relations, both a…

Psychoanalytic Supervision: The Intersubjective Development
The author argues that an intersubjective perspective on the analytic process makes the notion of purely didactic supervision, avoiding countertransference issues, untenable and that countertransference is both a clue to the analysand's psychic reality and a factor in its evolution. Supervision is seen as a highly personal learning process for both supervisor and supervisee and its emotional climate as a crucial factor in its evolution into a tra…

Emotional reactions of expectant fathers to their wives' first pregnancy
A group of 51 expectant fathers, whose wives were in the last three months of their first pregnancy, was compared to a control group of 51 married men without children. On the Anxiety Scale Questionnaire the expectant fathers were significantly higher in overall anxiety (both overt and covert), as well as in tension and apprehensiveness. The Blacky Picture Test indicated stronger Oedipal intensity, sibling rivalry and guilt feelings in the experi…
