In this paper I demonstrate that there is an explanation of the number marking we see on nouns when they combine with the numeralzerowhich combines Martí's (Semant. Pragmat., 2020a,10.3765/sp.13.3) account of the morphosyntax and semantics of the numeral-noun construction with Bylinina and Nouwen's (Glossa 3(1):98, 2018) semantics forzeroand which does not need to appeal to any further principles (e.g., agreement
Numerals and the theory of number
I develop an account of the semantics and nominal number marking of the numeral+noun construction in Turkish, Western Armenian and English that combines insights from Scontras’ (2014) approach to the same data with Martí’s (2017, 2020) treatment of grammatical number, based on Harbour (2014). Fundamental to my approach are two of Harbour’s number features, [±atomic] and [±minimal], their compositional semantics, and a syntax where these features …
Inclusive Plurals and the Theory of Number
I argue that an account of both inclusive plurals and the crosslinguistic typology of grammatical number requires postulating a [−atomic] feature (or something very much like it) in the structure of exclusive-plural DPs. When combined with the only theory we currently have that accounts for the crosslinguistic typology of number ( Harbour 2014 ), theories in which the exclusive-plural DPs of a language with inclusive plurals are [−atomic]-less un…
A unified approach to split scope
The semantics of plural indefinite noun phrases in Spanish and Portuguese
Restoring Indefinites to Normalcy
It is widely assumed that the scope of indefinites is island insensitive, i.e., that, generally, an indefinite inside of a syntactic island, such as an adjunct clause, is capable of taking scope outside of that island. This paper challenges this assumption by studying the scope behaviour of the Spanish plural indefinite algunos (roughly, 'some (pl.)'). It presents an experimental study that shows that the scope of algunos is not free and depends …
