  • Coerced inflected infinitives in Portuguese

Ana Maria Martins, Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2025•References: 2

In configurations where inflected and uninflected infinitives may alternate in Portuguese, the option without overt agreement may be incompatible with adjectival predicates, passivized verbs, or reflexive clitics and is subject to a puzzling dialectal variation among speakers. This paper argues that the infinitival form without agreement may be analyzed by speakers as involving a T head with no φ-features, a T head with just a number feature, or …

  • Agreeing and Moving across Traces

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Philosophies•2021

Within Minimalism, traces are often taken to be transparent for agreement and movement across them, which raises the question of how this could be properly accounted for within the copy theory of movement. This paper examines wh-traces in multiple wh-questions and argues that traces (lower copies) may or may not induce intervention effects depending on whether or not they are fully specified

  • On the locus and licensing of edge features

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Glossa a journal of general…•2021

Assuming Chomsky’s (2000; 2001) phase-based model, this paper deals with the issue of how the features that trigger successive cyclic A’-movement are lexically encoded and licensed. Modifying and expanding on work by Nunes (2014; 2016a), I argue that UG allows these “edge features” to be lexically hosted by phase heads (see Chomsky 2000) or moveable elements (see Bošković 2007) and that each choice has several intricate empirical consequences. In…

  • Edge Features and Multiple Wh-Questions

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Linguística e Teoria…•2021•References: 22

Building on Chomsky's (2000) proposal that A'-movement is triggered by an EPP-type of feature added to phase heads and Bošković's (2007) proposal that the relevant feature is to be found on the moving element itself, Nunes (2020) has argued that these two apparently conflicting views ultimately instantiate different grammatical options available at UG. He shows that much of the crosslinguistic variation regarding single wh-questions hinges on whe…

  • Identity Avoidance with Reflexive Clitics in European Portuguese and Minimalist Approaches to Control

    Ana Maria Martins, Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2017•References: 22

In this article, we discuss two types of cooccurrence restrictions involving reflexive clitics in European Portuguese and examine their implications for obligatory control. We argue that these restrictions may shed some light on where the controller is generated, thus making it possible to empirically test three Minimalist approaches to control: the predicate attraction approach (see Manzini and Roussou 2000 ), the PRO-based approach (e.g., Choms…

  • A note on Wh-islands and Finite Control in Brazilian Portuguese

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Estudos da língua(gem•2010

This paper discusses Ferreira’s (2000, 2004, 2009) claim that selective intervention effects in wh-island constructions in Brazilian Portuguese provide evidence for analyzing its referential null subjects as traces of A-movement. Based on the fact that intervening traces of wh-phrases in [Spec,CP] never prevent A-movement of an embedded subject out of an embedded declarative clause, I argue that a filled [Spec,CP] does not block A-movement either…

  • Icelandic Control Really Is A-Movement

Cedric Boeckx, Norbert Hornstein et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2010•Cited by: 5•References: 15

This article discusses the challenges that Bobaljik and Landau (2009) pose to Boeckx and Hornstein's (2006) movement-based analysis of control in Icelandic. We show in detail that contrary to what Bobaljik and Landau claim, the movement theory of control (with a modification to accommodate quirky Case, a specialty of Icelandic) makes the right empirical cuts regarding the issues they raise, namely, (a) the differences in Case agreement between co…

  • Copy-reflexive and copy-control constructions

Cedric Boeckx, Norbert Hornstein et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Variation Yearbook•2008

This paper discusses reflexive and control constructions in San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec (Lee 2003) and Hmong (Mortensen 2003), where instead of a reflexive in the former and a null category in the latter, one may find a copy of the antecedent. The paper argues that these constructions provide compelling evidence for a movement analysis of control (Hornstein 2001, 2003; Boeckx & Hornstein 2003, 2004) and reflexivization (Hornstein 2001), as well as…

  • Vehicle Change Phenomena as an Argument for Move F

    Joseph Aoun, Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2007•References: 3

Three different formal devices have been proposed within minimalism to replace Chomsky's (1993) covert movement of phrasal categories to check Case and agreement: expletive-associate relations (Brody 1995), movement of formal features (Chomsky 1995), and the operation Agree (Chomsky 2000, 2001). We propose that vehicle change effects (in the sense articulated by Fiengo and May (1994)) establish empirical grounds for distinguishing among these alt…

  • Linearization of Chains and Sideward Movement

    Jairo Nunes•BOOK•Linearization of Chains and…•2004

This highly original monograph treats movement operations within the Minimalist Program. Jairo Nunes argues that traces are not grammatical primitives and that their properties follow from deeper features of the system, and, in particular, that the phonetic realization of traces is determined by linearization computations coupled with economy conditions regarding deletion. He proposes a version of the copy theory of movement according to which mo…

  • On Asymmetries Between Parasitic Gap and Across-the-board Constructions

    Open Access•Norbert Hornstein, Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Syntax•2002•Cited by: 12•References: 3

Assuming that parasitic gaps (PGs) and across-the-board (ATB) gaps are derived through sideward movement (Nunes 1995, 2001; Hornstein 2001), this paper aims at explaining why ATB constructions are in general more permissive than PG constructions (Postal 1993). We argue that sideward movement is licensed only by Last Resort in PG constructions but is licensed by either Last Resort or the Parallelism Constraint in ATB constructions. The additional …

  • Sideward Movement

    Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•Linguistic Inquiry•2001•Cited by: 44•References: 9

Assuming the general framework of the Minimalist Program of Chomsky 1995, this article argues that Move is not a primitive operation of the computational system, but rather the output of the interaction among the independent operations Copy, Merge, Form Chain, and Chain Reduction (deletion of chain links for purposes of linearization). The crucial aspect of this alternative model is that it permits constrained instances of sideward movement, wher…

  • Cyclicity and Extraction Domains

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes, Juan Uriagereka•ARTICLE•Syntax•2000•Cited by: 60•References: 1

This paper attempts to provide a minimalist analysis of CED effects (see Huang 1982) in terms of derivational dynamics in a cyclic system. Assuming Uriagereka's (1999) Multiple Spell-out system, we argue that CED effects arise when a syntactic object K that is required at a given derivational step has become inaccessible to the computational system at a previous derivational stage, when the chunk of structure containing K was spelled out. Assumin…

  • Rasurando rasura

  • Some notes on procrastinate and other economy matters

    Open Access•Jairo Nunes•ARTICLE•DELTA Documentação de Estudos em…•1999

This paper argues that Chomsky's (1993) Procrastinate principle is not in consonance with the general guidelines of the Minimalist Program and proposes an alternative account of the preference for covert movement instead of overt movement and the preference for lexical insertion instead of movement. This proposal also accounts for the order of application of certain operations related to deletion of traces
