Co-constitution or ecological dominance? Situating economy, culture and race in capitalism
This article responds to Andrew Smith's call for a renewed materialist anti-colonial sociology by engaging three conceptual pairs that organise his argument: economy versus culture, material versus ideational, and race versus class. While fully endorsing Smith's insistence that capitalism cannot be reduced to one axis among others, and that the critique of empire cannot be collapsed into a critique of epistemic hierarchies, the article questions …
The rise of digital eco-technocracy: Ecological crisis, digital innovation and legitimacy in the adaptive society
This paper examines the convergence of digitalization and ecological sustainability within the framework of 'digital eco-technocracy' analyzing its implications for legitimacy. We first elaborate the reasons why we believe that adaptation is increasingly becoming an essential leitmotiv of social integration and transformation. We then argue that the convergence of digital and green has the potential to fundamentally reshape the relationship betwe…
You are not a loan’: Contentious debt politics since the North Atlantic Financial Crisis
Debt has constituted a pivotal theme of both older and more recent mobilizations and critical public debate. While academia has started new discussions about debt relations, literature on resistance against debt is relatively scarce and mostly focuses on the Global South before the North Atlantic Financial Crisis. The aim of this article is to contribute to filling this gap by studying debt-centered movements in recent anti-austerity politics. Th…
Failing to Plan Is Planning to Fail: Toward an Expanded Notion of Democratically Planned Postcapitalism
With the advent of digitalization, the more techno-optimist among critics of capitalism have articulated new calls for post-work and post-scarcity economics made possible by new advances in information and communication technology. Quite recently, some of this debate shifted for calls for digital-democratic planning to replace market-based allocation. This article will trace the lineages of this shift and present these new calls for digitally ena…

Social Movements and the Politics of Debt: Transnational Resistance against Debt on Three Continents
It would have been hard to miss the pivotal role debt has played for contentious politics in the last decades. The North Atlantic Financial Crisis, Global Recession and European Debt Crisis - as well as the recent waves of protest that followed them - have catapulted debt politics into the limelight of public debates. Profiting from years of fieldwork and an extensive amount of empirical data, Christoph Sorg traces recent contestations of debt fr…
