Academic freedom in becoming: Rethinking management control in the managerial university
In this paper, we propose a dynamic conception of academic freedom as a way for academics to respond to an increasing managerialisation of their activity. We argue that contemporary threats to academic freedom do not arise primarily from external demands for relevance, impact or accountability themselves, nor from management control systems per se. Rather, threats arise both to academic freedom and to the notional objectives of university managem…
A comparison of single-domain and multidomain executive functions cognitive training for enhancing cognition and well-being in older adults
This study investigated the efficacy of single-domain (working memory; WM) and multidomain core executive functions (EFs; cognitive flexibility, inhibitory control, WM) cognitive training programs in enhancing cognitive performance (measured objectively and subjectively) and well-being. Participants comprised 66 healthy older adults ( M age = 69.58, SD = 7.04) who were assigned to a 4-week single-domain WM, multidomain EF, or active control progr…
Living with chronic myelogenous leukemia in rural communities: Exploring factors related to tyrosine kinase inhibitors adherence with a mixed methods approach
PURPOSE: Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) improve chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) outcomes dramatically. However, limited research exists on patient-specific, medical, and psychosocial factors influencing TKI adherence. The purpose of the study was to better understand TKI adherence among rural CML patients, using a convergent parallel mixed-method design guided by the Information Motivation and Behavioral Skills Model. METHODS: Survivors with CM…
Justice without bias: A systematic review and meta-analysis of interventions aimed at reducing jury bias in Rape and sexual assault trials
Feeds, feelings, and focus: A systematic review and meta-analysis examining the cognitive and mental health correlates of short-form video use
Towards an Education Through and For Social Justice: Humanizing a Life Sciences Curriculum Through Co-Creation, Critical Thinking and Anti-Racist Pedagogy
Degree awarding gaps highlight the inequitable outcomes of higher education (HE) for racially minoritized students in the UK. This ongoing issue has been described as a "wicked problem", directly related to structural racism, or policies and practices that continually disadvantage racialized students. Movements to decolonize the curriculum bring hope and the tools to rebuild more socially-just institutions and societies. However, it is sometimes …
‘Love, Love not’—a discovery of study engagement at higher education and the factors involved
Taking that higher education is career-oriented, this study examines how Vietnamese undergraduate students engage with their study and how the factors related to the training program and occupation’s prospects contribute to students’ engagement with their study. The study applies a mixed-method approach. Self-administered questionnaire survey is used to collect data from 973 Vietnamese undergraduate students, of which 48.2% are social work studen…
Origins and developmental paths of medical conditions from mid-childhood to mid-adolescence in Australia: Early-life adverse conditions and their lasting effects
This study investigates various common medical conditions affecting Australian children aged 4-14 years and the impact of prenatal and early-life conditions on these health conditions using a large national data set (n = 4122) with 15 years of follow-up. Consistent with the developmental origins of health and diseases hypothesis and the life-course models of health, the in-utero environment and parental financial hardship during pregnancy and sho…
Listening to Experiences of Environmental Change in Rural Vietnam: An Intergenerational Approach
Locally led adaptation is increasingly promoted as an important strategy for addressing the impacts of climate change. However, the understanding of rural realities in the Global South is still limited by insufficient information about the complex and dynamic relationships between rural communities and their environment. These relationships are influenced both by the material aspects of place and by the social and cultural dynamics that shape ide…
Youth participation in environmental action in Vietnam: Learning citizenship in liminal spaces
Youth participation has become an important element of environmental governance and is also a way that young people learn about the expectations of citizenship. In the global South, young people are confronted with multiple understandings of citizenship as international development organisations may introduce citizenship in a liberal, democratic framing which may differ from national citizenship norms. In Vietnam, state agencies have a history of…
Immediate and long-term efficacy of executive functions cognitive training in older adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis
There has been growing interest in enhancing cognition in older adulthood via computerized cognitive training (CCT), though, there is controversy surrounding the efficacy of CCT in promoting improvements to functional everyday activities. As core executive-functions (EFs)-cognitive-flexibility, inhibition, working memory-are applicable to most aspects of daily living, CCT targeting these processes would likely promote gains on trained tasks, and …
