  • Stalinism and the Black Panther Party

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•American Communist History•2026

This article argues that the Black Panther Party incorporated Stalinist political elements. For one thing, the Party endorsed Stalinist ideology. This went beyond upholding Joseph Stalin’s legacy and supporting his interpretation of Marxism-Leninism. The Party denounced the ‘revisionism’ of Soviet de-Stalinization, while incorporating anti-revisionist principles from Maoism and Kimilsungism. Stalinist ideology also underlined the Party’s developm…

  • Imperialist racism, the highest stage of racism

    Open Access•Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Human Geography•2025•References: 1

By conceptualising imperialism as the highest stage of capitalism, V. I. Lenin developed his sub-theory of imperialist racism as the highest stage of racism. This theory develops the insights of Karl Marx and Frederick Engels in four major respects. Firstly, Lenin established that modern racism is the product of imperialism, the product of state monopoly capitalism. Modern racism is rooted in the imperialist class system, and not some primordial …

    Open Access•Joe Pateman, Angela Lazagna•ARTICLE•Cadernos Cemarx•2025•References: 1

O seu artigo publicado postumamente, Russos e Negros [Russians and Negroes], é particularmente elucidativo. O lema orientador do C…

  • The Contemporary Vitality of V. I. Lenin’s Theory of Ideology

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2024•References: 11

This article illuminates the contemporary vitality of Lenin's theory of ideology. Since the collapse of Soviet socialism, some have attempted to dismiss Lenin's theory as anti-Marxist and lacking in critical power. More recent studies of the Marxist theory of ideology have neglected Lenin entirely. Contrastingly, this article argues that Lenin's theory of ideology remains relevant, albeit misunderstood. First, Lenin highlighted the class essence …

  • Why Has Marxism-Leninism Succeeded in Cuba

Open Access•Joe Pateman, John Pateman•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cuban…•2023

Many dismiss Marxism-Leninism as an obsolete and discredited doctrine, one that died with the collapse of Soviet communism. Nevertheless, Marxism-Leninism lives on in Cuba, where the Communist Party is using it to guide the Revolution and construction of socialism. This raises the question: why has Marxism-Leninism succeeded in Cuba? This article identifies four reasons. First, and most importantly, Marxism is compatible with the Cuban revolution…

  • North Korea

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Asian Survey•2023•References: 18

In communist discourse, revisionism denotes a modification of socialist theory and practice that undermines the revolutionary essence of socialism. This article examines the meaning and purpose of North Korea’s anti-revisionism. Each leader has emphasized different aspects of anti-revisionism, in accordance with the changing circumstances. Kim Il Sung made no concessions to revisionism. He endorsed Juche, the monolithic ideological system, and Ko…

  • V. I. Lenin on Alienation

    Open Access•Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2023•References: 19

According to an old legend, Vladimir Lenin, the founder of Soviet Marxism, overlooked Karl Marx’s theory of alienation. For Marxist humanists, this theory underlies the emancipatory thrust of Marx’s thought, and since, in their view, Lenin’s acolytes ignored alienation, communist regimes failed to empower the workers. Considering these claims, this article challenges the legend that Lenin himself neglected Marx’s theory of alienation. It argues t…

  • V. I. Lenin’s Struggle against Anarchism

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2022•References: 12

In the historical struggle between Marxism and anarchism, Lenin played an important role. In “Anarchism and Socialism,” written in 1901, Lenin denounced anarchism as a petty bourgeois ideology. Lenin defended this view over the next twenty years, as he fought for Bolshevik hegemony in Russia. This article argues that Lenin’s struggle against anarchism was significant for several reasons. First, it clarified the fundamental differences between ana…

  • The centrality of Africa in Lenin’s theory of imperialism

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 8

Lenin’s Marxist theories have aided both African anti-imperialist struggles and the study of African political economy. Recently, however, some scholars have reinvigorated the postcolonial critique of Marxism as a Eurocentric doctrine, one that misunderstands and marginalises Africa and its peoples. Following Cedric Robinson, several analysts mention Lenin alongside Marx and Engels as a founder of Eurocentric Marxism. This article, by contrast, a…

  • Mao Zedong, China and Black Liberation

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Since Black Lives Matter (BLM) rose to prominence, liberal democracies have been internally divided over their response to the movement. Whilst some politicians have supported BLM’s struggle against anti-black racism, others have condemned it as unnecessary, or even harmful to democracy. China, by contrast, has displayed unwavering solidarity with BLM, by providing it with official coverage and support. In an attempt to discredit these efforts, l…

  • Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism and Marxism-Leninism

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Politics Religion & Ideology•2021•References: 1

In the mid 1970s, the North Korean regime stopped presenting its governing ideology as the creative application of Marxism-Leninism. Since Kim Jong-Un took office, the Workers’ Party of Korea has endorsed Kimilsungism-Kimjongilism, an ideology based upon the theories of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il. English language Commentators have long emphasized the differences between North Korean and Marxist-Leninist political theory. Kimilsungism-Kimjongili…

  • Friedrich Engels on state socialism

    Open Access•Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Human Geography•2021•References: 16

In the ideological legacy of Friedrich Engels, the critique of ‘state socialism’ has a prominent, if overlooked, place. According to this conception, the essence of socialism is that the existing state intervenes in the capitalist economy and society with reforms to benefit the working class. The first section of this article outlines Engels’ critique of state socialism. It mentions how left geographers have approached his remarks on the trend, s…

  • V. I. Lenin on the “Woman Question”

    Open Access•Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Science & Society•2021•Cited by: 3

In his writings and speeches Lenin showed considerable interest in the “Woman Question.” He argued, first, that the exploitation of female labor performs a central function in the development of capitalism. He claimed that women are “doubly oppressed,” since they lack equality in both the legal-political and domestic spheres. Second, Lenin endorsed the women's rights movement. He called for universal suffrage, criticized prostitution, and support…

  • J. V. Stalin and The British Road to Socialism

    Joe Pateman, John Pateman•ARTICLE•Labor History•2021•References: 16

Joseph Stalin exerted substantial influence over the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), the largest Communist party in the U.K. between 1951 and 1991, as well as its intellectual successor, the Communist Party of Britain (CPB), which has operated since 1988. This article explores Stalin’s impact upon The British Road to Socialism (BRS), the official programme of the CPGB and CPB. It does so by examining primary documents from the CPGB and R…

  • V. I. Lenin on Democracy

    Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•International Critical Thought•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The concept of democracy has a prominent place in the ideological legacy of V. I. Lenin, the founder of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the leader of the world’s first socialist state. In opposition to the Marxist revisionists of his era, who defined democracy as a “pure” category, a “neutral” form of government, Lenin highlighted its class essence. Democracy for him expresses the rule of a definite class. From this proposition he der…

  • Lenin without dogmatism

    Open Access•Joe Pateman•ARTICLE•Studies in East European Thought•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 12

A longstanding criticism of Lenin is that his epistemological contributions to the theory of scientific socialism prompted the decline of Marxism in dogmatism and despotism in the twentieth century. According to this narrative, Lenin claimed to possess the objective truth, and he therefore refused to tolerate alternative perspectives. This article subjects these claims to a textual analysis, and it argues that they are erroneous. Lenin defends a …
