    Open Access•Mike Rowland, Mike Rowlands•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2012•References: 16

    Open Access•Mike Rowland, Mike Rowlands et al.•ARTICLE•Techniques & culture•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 49

  • Towards GIS Mapping and Spatial Modelling of Archaeological Sites in the Southeast Queensland Bioregion

    Open Access•Mike Rowland, Malcolm Connolly•ARTICLE•Queensland Archaeological Research•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 19

In the early 1980s a strategic approach to the description, assessment and management of cultural heritage places using biogeographical boundaries was developed in Queensland. A recent refinement correlates sites on the Environmental Protection Agency's Indigenous Sites Database with environmental variables for the Moreton Basin Province of the Southeast Queensland Bioregion. Archaeological sites in the province are correlated with distance to wa…

  • Pre-European coastal settlement and use of the sea: A view from Queensland

Sean Ulm, Bryce Barker et al.•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 21

We draw attention to important omissions in the chronology of Australian coastal occupation presented by Nicholson and Cane (1994) in their recent review of the subject. In the Queensland section of their review, Nicholson and Cane (1994:110-11) state that coastal settlement is confined to the last 2000 years in the Moreton Bay area, and to the last 1500 years for the remainder of the Queensland coast, with the exception of Princess Charlotte Bay…

  • Archaeological Research, Site Recording, and Management, Archaeology Branch, Department of Community Services, Brisbane

    M J Rowland, Mike Rowland•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•1986•Cited by: 1•References: 3

At recent archaeological conferences I have been asked on a number of occasions what the objectives of the Archaeology Branch are in terms of archaeological research and cultural resource management in Queensland. It was apparent there were some misconceptions about what was being done (for example the notion that Environmental Impact Statements were not undertaken in Queensland). A recent editorial in Australian Archaeology 21 has called for a w…

  • Archaeological Investigations on MOA and Naghi Islands, Western Torres Strait

    M J Rowland, Mike Rowland•ARTICLE•Australian Archaeology•1985•Cited by: 9•References: 3

Archaeological investigations in the Torres Strait region have been limited and of a preliminary nature with reconstructions of Torres Strait prehistory still relying for their formulation on ethnohistorical sources, environmental data and archaeological evidence from areas north and south of the Strait. This apparent lack of interest in the archaeology of the area must be attributed to logistical difficulties, not to an underestimation of the ro…
