  • Islamophobia, anti-racism and the British left

    Open Access•Scarlet Harris•BOOK•Islamophobia, Anti-Racism and the…•2025

Drawing on first-hand accounts from anti-racist activists and community workers in two British cities, Islamophobia, anti-racism and the British left explores the treatment of Islamophobia by those committed to challenging it. The book interrogates the ways in which anti-racist activists and community workers understand the problem of Islamophobia, and what this means for their organised responses on the ground. Islamophobia remains one of the mo…

  • (Re)connecting anti-racisms: Islamophobia and the politics of police/prison abolition in contemporary Britain

    Open Access•Scarlet Harris•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 29

In recent years, questions of policing, prisons and the wider criminal justice system have increasingly taken centre stage in discussions and practices of anti-racism in Britain. More specifically, the Black Lives Matter movement, the Covid-19 pandemic and the introduction of the Conservative government's Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts (PCSC) Act have all contributed to the emergence of a nascent movement for police and prison abolition. At…

  • Omission, erasure and obfuscation in the police institutional killing of Black men

Open Access•Patrick Williams, Lisa White et al.•ARTICLE•Mortality•2023

Between 1990 and the time of writing, 1,849 people have died in police custody or otherwise following police contact in England and Wales, with people from racially minoritised backgrounds over-represented in use of force and restraint related deaths. Drawing upon research undertaken by the authors, alongside bereaved families, this paper approaches these deaths as a form of institutional killings, surfacing the norms, cultures and values which s…

  • Notes on policing, racism and the Covid-19 pandemic in the UK

    Open Access•Scarlet Harris, Remi Joseph-Salisbury et al.•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2022•Cited by: 2

This commentary excerpts from the research report ‘A threat to public safety: policing, racism and the Covid-19 pandemic’, carried out by the Centre on the Dynamics of Ethnicity (CoDE) and published by the Institute of Race Relations in September 2021. One of the only pieces of research based on the experiences of the policed and their testimonies, the report suggests that policing during the Covid-19 pandemic undermines public health measures wh…

  • Islamophobia, anti-racism and the British left: Muslim activists as 'racialised outsiders

    Scarlet Harris•ARTICLE•New Community•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 28

Against a backdrop of racialised nationalism and widespread securitisation of Muslim communities, how are those on the British political left responding to the issue of Islamophobia? This paper draws together empirical accounts from anti-racist activists with a series of theoretical contributions from scholars in the field of ‘race’ and racism studies. I point towards an ambivalence in talking about and challenging Islamophobia amongst non-Muslim…

  • Muslims in Scotland: Integrationism, state racism and the 'Scottish dream

    Open Access•Scarlet Harris•ARTICLE•Race & Class•2018•Cited by: 2

Historically, Scotland has sustained a remarkable level of avoidance in regards to discussions of race and racism, and analysis of Islamophobia in Scotland has been very limited. A recent book (one of only a few) which takes the Scottish Muslim community as its focus is Stefano Bonino's Muslims in Scotland: the making of community in a post-9/11 world. But, the author argues, it obscures institutional racism and leads to dangerous conclusions. By…

  • Beyond Collective Violence: Capturing Context and Complexity in Palestinian Diasporic Resistance

    Open Access•Scarlet Harris•ARTICLE•Critical Sociology•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Approximately 50 percent of the world's Palestinians reside in the diaspora, territorially disconnected from occupied Palestine, but no less part of a population so often associated with political resistance. This article asks: how do Palestinians living in the UK express resistance to the military occupation of their homeland? In what ways are such expressions of resistance shaped by social processes specific to such a context? It makes the case…
