Infrastructure territories as moving landscapes: Using digital media to narrate a Montreal highway corridor (Canada)
Urban highways tend to divide and fragment cities. As such infrastructure ages, questions about their future arise. An example of such a highway is the Montreal gateway corridor (Autoroute 20 and 720), which links downtown to Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport in Montreal, Canada. In advance of considering the redesign of this highway, this research explores how such infrastructure is not just visualised as technical territory but also …
Siting green stormwater infrastructure in a neighbourhood to maximise secondary benefits: Lessons learned from a pilot project
When siting green stormwater infrastructure (GSI), cities do not respond only to technical and regulatory requirements; they also strive to maximise environmental, aesthetic and social benefits. To help cities optimise the siting of GSI in the context of climate change, we developed a participatory decision support tool. Applied to a neighbourhood, this tool identified only a few sites where GSI would yield all secondary benefits and reduce clima…
Changing ruralities, changing landscapes: Exploring social recomposition using a multi-scale approach
Settlement pattern, environmental factors and ethnic background on a southwestern Quebec frontier (1795–1842)
In studies of frontier settlement patterns, different site factors are recognized as influential on the immigrant settlement process. Environmental factors such as soil features, while widely cited as crucial, have rarely been studied in enough depth to measure their relationship to other phenomena such as ethnic attractiveness. Qualitative and quantitative case studies in early 19th century Godmanchester township's sequence of land occupancy ind…
Rural Domestic Landscape Changes: A survey of the residential practices of local and migrant populations
Along with the social recomposition of rural communities, the increase in residential use of the countryside appears a determining factor in landscape change. The extent to which urban and non-farming migrants are settling in rural areas is creating a 'rural renaissance', characterized by a demographic revival in these areas. While many studies focus on rural landscapes, few empirical works have explored the residential practices that may ultimat…
