Environment, Development and Change in Rural Asia-Pacific examines the economic, political, social and environmental challenges facing rural communities in the Asia-Pacific region, as global issues intersect with local contexts.Such challenges, from climatic change and volcanic eruption to population growth and violent civil unrest, have stimulated local resilience amongst communities and led to evolving regional institutions and environment mana…

  • Introduction: That most remarkable of outside men - Harold Brookfield's intellectual legacy

    Open Access•John Connell, Éric Waddell•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Harold Brookfield's academic career spans more than half a century, traversing small tropical and subtropical islands and mountainous uplands, focusing on people–environment relations and linking to a diversity of institutions and disciplines. His unwavering commitment to fieldwork at the local level and to comparative study is paralleled by a healthy scepticism with respect to academic trends and orthodoxy of any kind, whether intellectual or ph…

The west-Pacific drought of 1972-1973 was accompanied in the highlands of Papua New Guinea by frosts of a severity not experienced since 1941. The food crops of between 130,000 and 150,000 people were severely damaged or destroyed. The Govern- ment instituted a major programme of famine relief, at the same time discouraging the traditional strategy of outmigration to stay with hosts, the importance of which the authorities were largely unaware. If the North American francophone community is to have a certain importance within the newly-emerging worldwide Francophonie, this hetereogeneous collectivity, geographically dispersed and possessing little political power, will have to display its creativity and relevance. Numbering about twenty million people—more than half of whom no longer speak French—this French America will have to redefine itself in order to take into account the realitie…

  • The influence of external relations on the promotion of French in Canada

    Éric Waddell•ARTICLE•Language Culture and Curriculum•1988•References: 6

The paper outlines the changing role of French in the Canadian identity from the Report of the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism in 1967 to the present time. It is argued that the new bilingualism in English‐speaking Canada, which largely consists of immersion French education, has more to do with Canada‐U.S.A. relations than it has with French‐English relations within Canada. For English‐Canadians, French marks a boundary, in th…

Contrary to the commonly held belief that following the British conquest, French Canadian society limited itself to a clearly defined geopolitical realm conceived as a stronghold into which a defeated people withdrew to build its future, Québécois civilization has been doggedly continental in scale. Events of recent years, including the successes and failures of the Quiet Revolution and the results of the 1980 referendum, lend credence to this vi…
