Implementing reading interventions to support disadvantaged children in England
In this paper, we present insights from the qualitative data collected during a process evaluation of a reading intervention project carried out in primary and secondary schools in West Yorkshire, England.Commercially available reading interventions, financed by the Strategic School Improvement Fund, were delivered by school staff to disadvantaged pupils over a period of four half-terms, and a team of university-based researchers carried out qual…
(Custodial) spaces to grow? Adolescent development during custodial transitions
Drawing on empirical data from two individual research projects, this paper extends the literature on child and youth incarceration and offers a previously unexplored analysis of experiences and transitions through institutional environments for young people. Different penal environments have different operational practices and treatment according to arbitrary age-determined constructions of childhood, youth and young adulthood, evidenced by decr…

Drawing upon interviews with young people held in institutions, stakeholders, and survey data from Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Prisons, it is argued that th…
Life Imprisonment From Young Adulthood
Life imprisonment from young adulthood is the latest offering from the Palgrave series on studies in prisons and penology. The research fulfils an important gap in knowledge about the experience of ‘the most extreme sanction of the state’ (p. 1): life imprisonment (sentences of 15 years or more) from a young age, with a fifth of participants being sentenced prior to their 18th birthday. The research originated from discussions with senior figures…
Disorder and disconnection
Parents caring for a child with a life threatening or life limiting illness experience a protracted and largely unknown journey, as they and their child oscillate somewhere between life and death. Using an interpretive qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with parents (n = 25) of children who had died. Findings reveal parents' experiences to be characterised by personal disorder and transformation as well as social marginalisation and …
