Doing understanding during triadic decision-making with people living with dementia
This paper examines how patients with dementia reveal their level of understanding during the complex process of making decisions around their medical care. Using Conversation Analysis, we examined 172 decision-making sequences across 64 memory clinic consultations and found that understanding is best viewed as an interactionally constructed continuum that patients can move along with the help of their interlocutors. We identified specific behavi…
The First Step in Triadic Decision-Making Involving People with Dementia: Determining Who Talks When
Everyone should have the opportunity to participate in decisions about their health, including people living with dementia. People with dementia typically bring a companion to medical appointments, so most care decisions are made in interactions involving three parties. To make decisions about their care, patients with dementia must have the opportunity to take a turn-at-talk in conversations where decisions are made. However, negotiating who spe…
The Impact of Social Isolation Due to Covid-19 on Symptom Progression in People With Dementia: Findings of the Solitude Study
PWD's symptoms and carers' burden remained stable over 6 months of observation. However, the amount of time spent under social restrictions before T0 appears to have had a significant detrimental impact on cognitive performance of patients. In fact, carer-reported cognitive decline during social isolation was consistent with the finding of poorer semantic memory, a domain sensitive to progression in Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, the initial str…
