  • Socioeconomic Deprivation and Cortical Morphology

Rajeev Krishnadas, John Mclean et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2013

OBJECTIVE: Neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation has been associated with poor cognitive function pertaining to language and the executive control. Few studies have explored the cortical morphology of regions most commonly associated with these functions. The aim of this study was to examine the association between neighborhood-level deprivation and the morphology of cortical regions associated with language and executive control in adults…

  • Employees with Long Term Illnesses or Disabilities in the UK Social Services Workforce

    John Mclean, John W McLean•ARTICLE•Disability & Society•2003•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Between 6% and 16% of the working age population have a long term illness or disability. 'Disability' is not consistently defined, however, and neither the distribution of disabled employees nor the nature of their disabilities is well documented. This paper presents the findings of a study of statutory social services employees in the UK and for the first time provides an estimate of the proportion of workers with long term illnesses or disabili…

  • Gay men's accounts of unsafe sex

Mary Boulton, John Mclean et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1995

This paper provides a qualitative analysis of the explanations given by a sample of 78 gay men in England of the most recent occasion on which they engaged in anal intercourse without a condom. Explanations are analysed and interpreted from the sociological perspective of 'accounts': that is, they are not viewed as exact descriptions of the 'real' motives for behaviour but are seen as a powerful resource that can illuminate the knowledge, assumpt…

  • Regular partners and risky behaviour

John Mclean, Mary Boulton et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1994

Studies in both the UK and the USA continue to show that gay and bisexual men put themselves at risk of exposure to HIV through unprotected intercourse, most often with regular partners. As part of a larger study of homosexually active men, 310 men who had had unprotected anal intercourse with a man in the previous year were asked to describe the last occasion on which this had happened. The majority of men had had unprotected intercourse with a …

  • Relapse' to unsafe sexual behaviour among gay men

    Open Access•Graham Hart, Mary Boulton et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•1992•Cited by: 12•References: 2

Recent studies of gay male sexual behaviour have employed a concept new to the literature in the area. Men who appeared to have adopted safer sex behaviours and are now having 'unsafe' sex in relation to possible infection with HIV are described as having 'relapsed'. In this paper we critically evaluate this concept. Firstly we undertake a methodological critique, looking in some detail at studies which have used 'relapse'. We then provide a conc…

  • Gay men, social support and HIV disease

Graham Hart, Ray Fitzpatrick et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•1990

As part of a large study of the effects of HIV and AIDS on gay male sexual behaviour, we investigated the extent to which gay men in the UK have access to social support and informal care at times of illness. The study sample (n = 502) demonstrated high levels of willingness to disclose sexuality to others, sociability and social integration. Over 90% reported that they had access to people whom they could turn for practical help at times of temp…

  • Meta-Attention

Daniel Reisberg, John Mclean•ARTICLE•The Journal of General Psychology•1985•Cited by: 2•References: 2

In two procedures, subjects were asked to perform an arithmetic task while hearing distracting auditory messages. Subjects were instructed to ignore these messages. After each trial, subjects judged how disruptive they felt that trial's distractor had been. Subjects' self-reports were unrelated to the actual distraction effect, measured in performance. In Experiment 2, a manipulation of motivation considerably decreased the auditory messages' abi…
