Impact of Covid-19 on women living with HIV who are survivors of intimate partner violence
Among this sample of WLWH who are all lifetime IPV-survivors, nearly half had ongoing IPV exposure. The COVID-19 public health emergency period affected WLWH in varied ways, but impacts were most profound for women experiencing concurrent mental health and substance use problems. Findings have important implications for future interventions to improve women's health and social outcomes
Experience delivering an integrated service model to people with criminal justice system involvement and housing insecurity
Navigation of services can be particularly challenging for individuals experiencing criminal justice involvement, homelessness, and co-occurring medical, psychiatric, and substance use issues, which can be addressed holistically in an integrated service model. Integrated service delivery was time-, resource-, and staffing-intensive, and challenged by the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring innovative solutions to sustain participant engagement

Improving Health Equity for Women Involved in the Criminal Legal System
Evaluation of HIV risk and outcomes in a nationally representative sample of incarcerated women in Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine
Eastern European and Central Asian (EECA) is the only region globally where HIV incidence continues to rise. HIV is concentrated among high risk groups like prisoners. HIV prevalence is higher among women than men in both prisons and communities. Data are lacking on the HIV care continuum among female prisoners to inform effective HIV prevention and treatment interventions. This study examined HIV risk, prevalence of infectious diseases, access t…
Depressive symptoms, physical symptoms, and health-related quality of life among older adults with HIV
An event-level examination of successful condom negotiation strategies among young women
This study examines the effect of condom negotiation strategies on condom use and partner type and substance use before sex as moderators of strategy effectiveness. Women reported their daily sexual behavior during the last month. Withholding sex was more strongly associated with condom use when utilized with a non-casual sex partner. Directly requesting condom use was more strongly and using deceptive reasons to influence condom use was less str…
The becoming-methadone-body
In this paper, we reflect on health intervention translations as matters of their implementation practices. Our case is methadone treatment, an intervention promoted globally for treating opioid dependence and preventingHIVamong people who inject drugs. Tracing methadone's translations in high-security prisons in the Kyrgyz Republic, we notice the multiple methadones made possible, what these afford, and the onto-political effects they make. We w…
Evaluating concurrent validity of criminal justice and clinical assessments among women on probation
BACKGROUND: Women in the criminal justice (CJ) system experience complex and comorbid medical, psychiatric, and substance use disorders, which often contribute to CJ involvement. To identify intersections between CJ and health needs, we calculated Spearman r correlations between concurrent CJ and clinical assessments from women on probation in Connecticut who were enrolled in a clinical trial. We examined longitudinal trends in CJ risk scores ove…
HIV Risk perception and eligibility for pre-exposure prophylaxis in women involved in the criminal justice system
Women involved in the criminal justice system (WICJ) are at high risk of acquiring HIV and would benefit from HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) but there are no studies in this population to inform PrEP implementation programs. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of HIV-uninfected, cis-gender women on probation, parole and/or recently released from prison/jail to assess PrEP awareness, eligibility, potential barriers to uptake, and the PrEP c…
Beyond the syndemic
BACKGROUND: HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) disproportionately affect women who experience intimate partner violence (IPV). OBJECTIVE: The current study (1) applied a syndemic framework to study the collective effects of problematic drug use, hazardous drinking, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on fear of condom negotiation, condom negotiation, and condom use and (2) evaluated condom negotiation (controlling for…
Evidence-based interventions to enhance assessment, treatment, and adherence in the chronic Hepatitis C care continuum
Sex-Related Disparities in Criminal Justice and HIV Treatment Outcomes
Objectives. We evaluated sex-related differences in HIV and criminal justice (CJ) outcomes. Methods. We quantified sex-related differences in criminal offenses, incarcerations, and HIV outcomes among all HIV-infected inmates on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Connecticut (2005–2012). Computed criminogenic risk scores estimated future CJ involvement. Stacked logistic regression models with random effects identified significant correlates of HIV vi…
Emergency Department Use among HIV-Infected Released Jail Detainees
Gender Disparities in HIV Treatment Outcomes Following Release From Jail
Objectives. We assessed gender differences in longitudinal HIV treatment outcomes among HIV-infected jail detainees transitioning to the community. Methods. Data were from the largest multisite prospective cohort study of HIV-infected released jail detainees (n = 1270)—the Enhancing Linkages to HIV Primary Care and Services in Jail Setting Initiative, January 2008 and March 2011, which had 10 sites in 9 states. We assessed baseline and 6-month HI…

Substance Abuse, Violence, and HIV in Women
Women in the United States are increasingly affected by HIV/AIDS. The SAVA syndemic—synergistic epidemics of substance abuse, violence, and HIV/AIDS—is highly prevalent among impoverished urban women and potentially associated with poor HIV outcomes. A review of the existing literature found 45 articles that examine SAVA's impact on (1) HIV-associated risk-taking behaviors, (2) mental health, (3) healthcare utilization and medication adherence, a…
