    Open Access•Bunmi S Malau-Aduli, Shannon Saad et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Medical Education•2026

BACKGROUND: Readiness for practice (RFP) is a critical outcome for medical education, reflecting a graduate’s ability to transition from student to clinician. Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) play a pivotal role in evaluating RFP. This study aimed to investigate the conceptualisation and operationalisation of RFP within the OSCE context and evaluate the contribution of a newly developed RFP-focused rating tool compared to tradit…

  • Physical activity interventions for older adults – an overview of systematic reviews

Open Access•Jo Canneaux, Richard A Sharpe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2026

The proportion of people meeting recommended physical activity (PA) guidelines declines with age. Older adults who are physically inactive have an increased risk of: all-cause mortality; chronic diseases; injury and reduced cognitive functioning. Multiple systematic reviews aim to understand the effectiveness of PA interventions but the evidence is fragmented and it is unclear how well the research reflects the needs of older people. We conducted…

Robert M White, Rob White et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2016

Sail training refers to sea voyages designed to foster personal and social change. Such training has mainly involved young people but may have the potential to benefit adults who are recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. During the voyage described here clients in drug rehabilitation centres across the UK were given the opportunity to participate in a 5-day sail training voyage. Pre- and post-voyage interviews were conducted with 11 clients…

  • Resisting medications

    Open Access•Jamie Murdoch, C Salter et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 14

Adherence research has been dominated by attitudinal approaches that isolate individual statements made in interviews and then assign a fixed attitude to the individual who made that statement. Despite much sociological research having raised questions about the notion of fixed attitudes, little research has theorised the process by which individual utterances about medicine-taking are produced as a form of resistance to medications within interv…

  • American Muslims and Religious Pluralism1

    Open Access•Jane Smith, Jane I Smith•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2011•References: 13

The issue of whether or not Islam as a religion allows for pluralism, or whether the Qur'an is a pluralistic scripture, seems to have taken on new urgency for some American Muslim scholars in light of 9/11 and reactions to Islam from other Americans. In this article I look at some of the ways these scholars have interpreted pluralism, grouping their responses into the general categories of concern for justice, internal critique of current realiti…

  • Postglacial vegetation history of Mitkof Island, Alexander Archipelago, southeastern Alaska

    Open Access•Thomas A Ager, PAUL E CARRARA et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2010

An AMS radiocarbon-dated pollen record from a peat deposit on Mitkof Island, southeastern Alaska provides a vegetation history spanning ∼12,900 cal yr BP to the present. Late Wisconsin glaciers covered the entire island; deglaciation occurred > 15,400 cal yr BP. The earliest known vegetation to develop on the island (∼12,900 cal yr BP) was pine woodland ( Pinus contorta ) with alder ( Alnus ), sedges (Cyperaceae) and ferns (Polypodiaceae type). B…

As a result, this article focuses on the literacy practices of two mothers who participated in the study. Because of their Aboriginal ancestry and the historical context of their lives, these two participants fell into a community separate from the larger communit…

  • Animals in Experimental Reports

Lynda Birke, Jane Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Society and Animals•1995•Cited by: 8•References: 3

In this paper, we analyze the ways in which the use of animals is described in the "Methods" sections of scientific papers. We focus particularly on aspects of the language of scientific narrative and what it conveys to the reader about the animals. Scientific writing, for example, tends to omit details of how the animals are cared for. Perhaps more importantly, it is constructed in ways that tend to minimize what is happening to the animal; thus…

In light of limited health care funds, there is a need for reliable information relating costs to clinical outcomes. Distinction should be made between diseases for which improved outcomes relate to intensity of care and those for which limits of current knowledge preclude improved results. A survey of 1,656 burn admissions to 73 hospitals over a one-year period showed that length of stay, unpaid bills, and the proportion of unpaid bills to total…
