I'll put up with things for a long time before I need to call anybody: Face work, the Total Institution and the perpetuation of care inequalities
Failures in fundamental care (e.g. nutrition or pain-relief) for hospitalised patients can have serious consequences, including avoidable deaths. Policy rhetoric of 'shared decision-making' fails to consider how structural constraints and power dynamics limit patient agency in nursing staff-patient interactions. Goffman's concepts of face work, the presentation of self and the Total Institution shaped our analysis of interview and focus group dat…
The relationship of age, activity, and body size on osteoarthritis in weight-bearing skeletal regions
Effects of osteoarthritis on age‐at‐death estimates from the human pelvis
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the degree of error in age-at-death estimates when osteoarthritis (OA) is present in three separate pelvic joint areas: (1) the pubic symphysis, (2) the auricular surface, and (3) the acetabulum from a modern known-age European cemetery sample of adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Age-at-death ranged from 17 to 79 years (x̄ =50.9 years; n = 252). OA in the pelvic joints was evaluated using standard ranked categorical s…
Feeding behavior and nutrient intake in spiny forest‐dwelling ring‐tailed lemurs ( Lemur catta ) during early gestation and early to mid‐lactation periods: Compensating in a harsh environment
Strong resource seasonality in Madagascar has led to the evolution of female feeding priority and weaning synchrony in most lemur species. For these taxa, pregnancy/early lactation periods coincide with low food availability, and weaning of infants is timed with increased resources at the onset of the rainy season. Reproductive females experience high metabolic requirements, which they must accommodate, particularly when food resources are scarce…

Maternal Behavior and Infant Congenital Limb Malformation in a Free-Ranging Group of Macaca fuscata on Awaji Island, Japan
Demographic and life‐history patterns in a population of ring‐tailed lemurs ( Lemur catta ) at Beza Mahafaly Reserve, Madagascar: A 15‐year perspective
Over 15 field seasons (1987–2001), we collected census and life‐history data on a population of individually identified ring‐tailed lemurs at the Beza Mahafaly Reserve, Madagascar. No significant difference was found in population size over the study period, though a marked decline in the population occurred following a 2‐year drought. The population rebounded rapidly after the immediate postdrought period. There was nearly a complete replacement…
Adult Male Scent-Marking in Lemur catta and Eulemur fulvus rufus
Adoption of a Wild orphaned ringtailed lemur infant by natal group members: Adaptive explanations
The socioecology of the ringtailed lemur: Thirty-five years of research
Linnaeus' original scientific description of Lemur catta, the ringtailed lemur, was based on a living animal brought to England in 1749. Although there were many brief descriptions of wild ringtailed lemurs, it was not until Jolly wrote her now classic book, Lemur Behavior, that we had our first detailed description of the natural history of these beautiful animals (Fig. 1). Since then, long-term field studies, mainly from two study sites in Mada…
Natural Disasters and Primate Populations: The Effects of a 2-Year Drought on a Naturally Occurring Population of Ring-Tailed Lemurs (Lemur catta) in Southwestern Madagascar
Intermale affiliative behavior in ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Beza-Mahafaly reserve, Madagascar
Affiliative relationships between adult males and immature group members in naturally occurring ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta)
Affiliative relations between adult males and immature group members were studied in three naturally occurring groups of ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta) over a 12-month period at Beza-Mahafaly Reserve, southwestern Madagascar. No statistically significant difference was found in rates of affiliative interactions between adult males and older immatures (juveniles and adolescents) over reproductive seasons. However, some of the adult males in two f…

Why Be Vigilant? The Case of the Alpha Animal
Male-female affiliative relationships in naturally occurring ringtailed lemurs (Lemur catta) at the Beza-Mahafaly Reserve, Madagascar
Affiliative behavior between adult male and female ringtailed lemurs was examined as part of a project concerning male affiliation with conspecifics of all age/sex classes. Males in three social groups were studied over a 12 month period. Male-female preferred partnerships existed, and were variable according to reproductive season. Dominance rank, age, or tenure of the male did not appear to affect either the number of partnerships or frequency …
