Primary care use and cardiovascular disease risk in Russian 40–69 year olds

This cross-sectional study compares the characteristics of CVD-free participants with and without recent primary care contact to ascertain their CVD risk and health status. Persistent low adherence to hypertension treatment in Kyrgyzstan
It is well known that cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a growing cause of mortality and morbidity in low-and middle-income countries (LMIC). While hypertension (HTN), a leading risk factor for CVD, can be easily managed with widely available medicines, there is a huge gap in treatment for HTN in many LMIC. One such country is Kyrgyzstan, where HTN is a major public health concern and adherence to medication is low. The reasons for low adherence …
The Mystery of Missing Female Children in the Caucasus
CONTEXT: Official data on sex ratios at birth suggest a rise in sex-selective abortions in some post-Soviet states following the introduction of ultrasonography. However, questions remain about the validity of official data in these nations as well as whether the high sex ratios at birth are a statistical artifact. METHODS: Trends in sex ratios at birth from 1985 to 2009 for 12 post-Soviet states were examined using vital registration data. For t…
The economic burden of chronic disease care faced by households in Ukraine
The cost of chronic care in Ukraine places a burden on individual patient households. Households of angina patients are more likely to engage in distress financing to cover the cost of treatment, and a high proportion of patients do not acquire prescribed medicines because they cannot afford them. This warrants further research on the burden of NCD care in other LMIC, especially where OPP for health care is common. Health policies aimed at reduci…
Changing patterns of fruit and vegetable intake in countries of the former Soviet Union

Design Cross-sectional surveys. A standard questionnaire was administered at both time points to examine fruit and vegetable consumption frequency. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between demographic, s…
Things Can Only Get Better? Changing Views of the Past, Present and Future in the Former Soviet Union
Previous research has reported substantial levels of nostalgia for the Soviet era among citizens of some of the independent republics that emerged from its collapse. We report new analyses from eight former Soviet republics, and from two surveys, in 2001 and 2010, comparing attitudes to government in the Soviet period and at the time of the surveys, as well as expectations for the future. Everywhere, views of the past have become less positive an…
Do citizens of the former Soviet Union trust state institutions, and why
This study examines trust in political institutions using data from surveys in nine former Soviet countries conducted in 2001 and in 2010/2011. Four hypotheses, micro and macro cultural and institutional, are tested. A measure of generalised trust in state institutions is compared across countries, alongside interpersonal trust, to examine the macro-theories. A multi-level analysis, using both individual variables from the survey, and aggregate v…
Analysing compliance of cigarette packaging with the FCTC and national legislation in eight former Soviet countries
Despite progress in the use of health warning messages, gaps still remain-particularly with the use of deceptive labels. Stronger surveillance and enforcement mechanisms are required to improve compliance with the FCTC and national legislation
Health insurance coverage and health care access in Moldova
BACKGROUND: In 2004, the Moldovan government introduced mandatory (social) health insurance (MHI) with the goals of sustainable health financing and improved access to services for poorer sections of the population. The government pays contributions for non-employed groups but the self-employed, which in Moldova include many agricultural workers, must purchase their own cover. This paper describes the extent to which the Moldovan MHI scheme has m…
Mobilizing youth for health
The mid-Volga city of Saratov, Russia, has been the location of an effective grassroots anti-drug volunteer youth movement in recent years, with similar developments in other Russian cities. This has taken place, with some support from foreign agencies, in the context of a particular official post-Soviet youth and drug policy that has been less than wholly successful in regulating drug use among young people. Establishing close working relations …
