The Emergence of New Transgendering Identities in the Age of the Internet
This chapter is a case study of the emergence of two new transgendering identities in the age of the Internet, situated within the conceptual frameworks we have developed elsewhere for the sociological analysis of the full range of transgender diversity in contemporary Euro-American societies (Ekins 1997; Ekins and King 2001a, 2006). These conceptual frameworks were based, principally, on extensive life history work with several hundred Euro-Amer…
Transgender, Transvestism, and Transsexualism
Twenty years ago a sociological encyclopedia would not have included a separate entry featuring cross‐dressing or sex‐changing. The medicalization and pathologizing of these phenomena under such categorizations as transvestism, transsexualism, gender dysphoria, and intersex ensured that cross‐dressing and sex‐changing were considered, in the main, to be the domain of medicine and psychology. The small number of sociological studies relating to “t…
The Transgender Phenomenon
This groundbreaking study sets out a framework for exploring transgender diversity for the new millennium. It sets forth an original and comprehensive research and provides a wealth of vivid illustrative material

Gender Migration
This article argues that gender reassignment is best conceptualized for sociological purposes as gender migration, drawing parallels with the process of geographical migration. Both gender and geographical migrants often see themselves as beginning a new life; social membership and identity has to be reworked and negotiated; a new way of life has to be learnt; the old one has to be left behind. Migrants of both kinds are often regarded as undesir…
Towards a Sociology of Transgendered Bodies
The articulation of a generic social process of 'body femaling' presented in Ekins (1993) and elaborated in Ekins (1997) is further developed in this article to provide a conceptual framework for a sociology of transgendered bodies. Transgendering refers both to the idea of moving across (transferring) from one pre-existing gender category to another (either temporarily or permanently), and to the idea of transcending or living 'beyond gender' al…

The Transvestite and the Transsexual
Using interview and documentary material, this sociological study describes and examines the experience of both groups from the perspective of transvestites and transsexuals themselves and from the perspective of surgeons, psychiatrists and psychologists. It seeks to understand the nature of transvestism and transsexualism as social categories and considers how and why they have emerged, how they are applied and their consequences
Social constructionism and medical knowledge
Bury (1986) and Nicolson and McLaughlin (1987) have respectively attacked and defended social constructionism in relation to medical sociology. In this article I try to further the debate by considering how a form of constructionism has been used to study a small area of medical knowledge ‐ that relating to transsexualism. The literature on this topic reveals two stories; one claims that transsexualism has been discovered, the other that it has b…
Condition, Orientation, Role or False Consciousness? Models of Homosexuality and Transsexualism
Two aspects of theories of deviant behaviour are outlined and discussed. These are concerned with whether or not the deviant behaviour indicates some inherent quality of the actor and with the tenability of that behaviour from the theorist's point of view. Combining these aspects produces four models which are discussed here in relation to homosexuality and transsexualism. The 'condition' and 'orientation' models presume an intrinsic nature, wher…
