Hasan, Ruqaiya
Ruqaiya Hasan (1931–2015) was a key contributor to the “systemic functional” school of linguistics, making notable contributions to various fields of linguistic study. In this volume, she is located within the “grammar” section, but her work is also just as relevant to “literacy,” “language, ideology, culture and context,” and “lexis.” She foregrounded the study of meaning in society and brought linguistics into dialogue with a range of other dis…
Exploring the “language” part of language education
This paper is based on a series of lectures Halliday presented in the Faculty of Education, University of Hong Kong in 2005. Logical analysis as a qualitative method II: Conflict of ideas and the topic of illness
In the previous paper, a qualitative method was demonstrated which was based on logical analysis, and illustrated on themes arising in ill-ness and old age. The emphasis was on revealing the deductions of informants, not on propounding a deductive theory about them. In the present paper general issues arising from the previous demonstration are considered. On issues of explanation and research design logical analysis is compared with statistical …
Logical analysis as a qualitative method I: Themes in old age and chronic illness
Qualitative methods have been criticized for their lack of explicit procedures and weakness in explanation. The present paper draws attention to a qualitative approach with a clear procedure and wide explanatory scope - logical analysis. Logic has been neglected as a way of organizing informants'accounts because it has been identified with a procedure for organizing theory. In this paper, the attempt is to reverse the emphasis, and to demonstrate…

Disability: A model and measurement technique
Current methods of ranking or scoring disability tend to be arbitrary. A new method is put forward on the hypothesis that disability progresses in regular, cumulative patterns. A model of disability is defined and tested with the use of Guttman scale analysis. Its validity is indicated on data from a survey in the community and from postsurgical patients, and some factors involved in scale variation are identified. The model provides a simple mea…
