  • Chinese Diaspora-Settler Gazes on Rednote: How Platforms Reinforce Colonial, Relational-feminist, and Middle-class Representations

Open Access•Fan Yang, Jessie Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural Studies•2026

This paper studies how contemporary Chinese diasporic settlers represent their experiences of Australia on Rednote (Xiaohongshu), a visually oriented social media platform with a predominantly young, female user base. Analysis of 248 Rednote posts by Chinese migrants in Australia reveals recurring portrayals of Australia as an empty land of leisure, a site of Chinese female liberation, and a space of upward mobility, framed through colonial imagi…

  • How “diagnostic” criteria interact to shape synesthetic behavior: The role of self-report and test–retest consistency in synesthesia research

Open Access•Nicholas Root, Ana Chkhaidze et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2025

The optimal consistency cutoff score is context-dependent (differs across language). • Self-report alone is sufficient to distinguish synesthetes from non-synesthetes. • Inconsistent self-reported synesthetes behave like synesthetes on two tasks. • Consistency values and synesthesia interact on the Synesthetic Stroop effect. • Consistency values and synesthesia exert independent influences on the Synesthetic Palette. In the past few decades, rese…

  • Figurations of Mentorship for Cultural Work

    Open Access•Frédérik Lesage, Yijia Zhang•ARTICLE•Cultural Sociology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 32

As cultural work becomes increasingly precarious and digitally mediatized, we ask how mentorship can continue to play a crucial role in shaping how the know-how of cultural work is organized and shared. Drawing on a case study of a mentorship program for cultural work taking place in Greater Vancouver, Canada, we propose conceptualizing mentorship as a figuration, which we describe by tracing three interdependent threads: a constellation of actor…

  • Mothers and grandmothers: Rethinking motherhood in the context of intergenerational caregiving

Open Access•A Hanser, Yijia Zhang•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•2025•References: 61

ObjectiveThis study examines how the intergenerational caregiving exchanges from grandmother (maternal and paternal) to mother influence early motherhood experiences and childcare practices.BackgroundMotherhood scholarship often neglects the influence of grandmothers on how women mother, or when acknowledging caregivers like grandmothers often fails to consider the potentially ambivalent ways grandmother caregiving affects mothers. Research on in…

  • The relationship between intimate partner violence and child malnutrition: A retrospective study in 29 sub-Saharan African countries

Open Access•Kunhong Lin, Pengxiang Zhou et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2024

Introduction and background Intimate partner violence (IPV) and child malnutrition are global public health issues. Assessing the association between IPV and child anthropometric failures (stunting, underweight, and wasting) in 29 Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries can provide significant global health solutions. Some studies have found an association between IPV against women and child malnutrition, but the conclusions are inconsistent. The phy…

  • Palatalization in Laomian: Evolution and resistance

Open Access•Yijia Zhang, Xiaoyu Jin et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2023

Palatalization is a common phenomenon in the Laomian language of South-east Asia. This paper compares the phonetic bilabial, velar, and coronal consonants of Laomian and their counterparts in related languages. A phonological analysis of the evolution of palatalization in Laomian is provided from a feature geometry perspective using the frameworks of nonlinear phonology and Optimality Theory. The results show that bilabials in Laomian, like those…

  • Mobile Media During the Pandemic: Four Scenarios to Help Us Imagine a Mobile Media Future Towards Liberation

Open Access•Mai Nou Xiong-Gum, Jeonghyun Lee et al.•ARTICLE•AoIR Selected Papers of Internet…•2023

Together, our projects pose the question of what else can be possible as a way to rearrange the power relations that have contributed to the asymmetric flows of information and resources to some instead of others. We are inspired by indigenous scholars’ claim that “decolonization is not a metaphor” because liberation should not be a metaphor: it should be a possibility. We, panelists, hope to engage conversations that address the future of the in…

  • Subseasonal reversals of winter surface air temperature in mid-latitude Asia and the roles of westward-shift NAO

Open Access•Xiaolei Song, Zhicong Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2023

Reversals of surface air temperature anomalies over mid-latitude Asia (SAT MA ) have become more frequent. Six winters have been reversed over the last decade, which had serious negative consequences for agricultural production, ecological systems, and human health. This subseasonal reversal can be observed in the second mode of season-reliant empirical orthogonal function analysis, showing a persistent opposite anomaly between early and late win…

  • Be the mother, not the daughter: Immigrant Chinese women, postpartum care knowledge, and mothering autonomy

    Open Access•Yijia Zhang, A Hanser•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Scholars have documented the transformation of modern motherhood, as mothering practices have been a target of medical knowledge that comes to define correct modes of conduct for women caring for their pregnant bodies, undergoing childbirth and childrearing. Such accounts usually set scientific knowledge and medical authority in opposition to women's autonomy. Drawing on the interviews with immigrant Chinese mothers in Canada, we offer a differen…

Open Access•Yijia Zhang, Zhicong Yin et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Extreme cold waves frequently occur in east of China that dramatically endanger ecological agriculture, power infrastructure and human life. In this study, we found that the ‘Warm Arctic-Cold Siberia’ pattern (WACS) significantly enhanced cold waves in east of China according to daily composites from 1979 to 2018. During the winter 2020/21, a record-breaking cold wave broke out following a noticeable WACS phenomenon and induced the record-low sur…
