  • The European Identity

    Stephen Green, Stephen D Green•BOOK•The European identity•2016

What--if anything--do the twenty-eight member states of the European Union have in common? Amidst all the variety, can one even speak of a European identity? In this timely book, Stephen Green explores these questions and argues for the necessity of the European voice in the international community. Green points out that Europeans can readily define the differences that separate them from others around the globe, but they have yet to clearly defi…

In contemporary global financial markets, the production and investment of capital is dependent upon complex systems of risk management. In this paper I explore the 'modern' notion of risk within these markets. I argue that these systems are not only dependent upon institutional infrastructure and material resources but are also maintained by a specific 'risk' culture, an entrenched set of practices of market configuration, technological developm…

  • A Plague on the Panopticon

    Stephen Green•ARTICLE•Information Communication & Society•1999

With technological advances in data-manipulation, the increased 'informability' of our daily lives and the potential for social management, surveillance has become a key site for understanding the workings of power within the global informational economy. Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon has, courtesy of Foucault, become a dominant metaphor in surveillance studies. This central eye, aimed at the moral reform of institutionalized bodies and operating t…

This is an early report of data from an on-going, repeated, cross-sectional study of a community sample of Glasgow injecting drug users. Although HIV was first detected among Glasgow's drug injectors in 1985, data from the first two years of our annual samples (1990 and 1991) indicate that HIV prevalence continues to be low in this population, in the order of 1 or 2 per cent. Possible reasons for this apparent continuing low prevalence are examin…

Government policy on services for the elderly is to increase the provision of care in the community. This paper examines this policy in relation to informal help received from relatives and friends. Drawing on the results of a pilot study of 92 people over the age of 75, registered in a group general practice, data are presented on the balance between informal and formal help over a group of activities of daily livhg. The main informal helpers ar…
