Individual sensory experiences, socialized senses, and everyday lived religion in practice
Building on the conference theme, 'Sensing Religion', this article argues that the sociology of religion needs to pay attention to sensory experiences. Our discipline has traditionally focused on religion's cognitive qualities - beliefs, creeds, and theologies - along with its organizational structures. By and large, we have failed to encounter, much less think about, other aspects of religion, particularly those that involve the senses. We have …
Lived Religion: Faith and Practice in Everyday Life
What are we to make of the Latina schoolteacher who considers herself a good Catholic, rarely attends Mass, but meditates daily at her home altar (where she mixes images of the Virgin of Guadalupe with those of Frida Kahlo, and traditional votive candles with healing crystals), yet feels particularly spiritual while preparing food for religious celebrations in her neighborhood? Diverse religious practices such as these have long baffled scholars …
Personal Knowledge and Beyond: Reshaping the Ethnography of Religion
Over the last decade the sociology of religion and religious studies have experienced a surge of ethnographic research. Scholars now use ethnography, as anthropologists have long done, as a valued source of knowledge from which they draw their pictures of the religious world. Yet, many researchers of religion have yet to grapple with the issues that are changing anthropologists' use of the method. Personal Knowledge and Beyond seeks to foster a c…

Religion and Healing the Mind/Body/Self
In order to understand the linkage between religion and healing, we must go well beyond the theme of body regulation. Although religion does involve body regulation and control, and although these functions are reflected in healing practices, there are many other ways by which religion is linked with human bodies. We will arrive at a far richer appreciation of this linkage if we start with a broad sociology of the human body, its illnesses and he…

Emerging Themes in U.S.
Health and Spirituality as Contemporary Concerns
One theme of particular importance in contemporary U.S. religion and quasi-religion is health and healing. Groups as diverse as Pentecostal Christians and New Age groups, women's spirituality groups and New Thought churches are promoting non-medical approaches to health and healing. Indeed, to many contemporary Americans, health and healing appear to be salient metaphors for salvation and holiness. Religious and quasi-religious attention to healt…
Religion: The Social Context
Religion and Region: Sociological and Historical Perspectives
T1his symposium has been a brief opportunity for interdisciplinary exchange between sociologists and historians with a helpful focus on specific regional and denominational patterns. As the lively discussion following these papers has shown, The Third Disestablishment proves to be a useful springboard for interpretation of broad historical changes. We need more such interdisciplinary interchange of ideas, because sociological survey methods tend …
Religion and the Body: Rematerializing the Human Body in the Social Sciences of Religion
IllThe social sciences of religion could be transformed by taking seriously the fact that humans are embodied.A new conceptualization of a mindful body has the potential to lead to profound shifts in how we view our subjects and their worlds. Our research strategies need to take into account that believers (and nonbelievers) are not merely disembodied spirits, but that they experience a material world in and through their bodies.Greater awareness …

Ritual, Symbolism and Healing

Testimony as a Commitment Mechanism in Catholic Pentecostal Prayer Groups
Since the emphasis of the research was to examine language use in prayer meetings and commitment mechanisms in the process of induction, seven Catholic pentecostal prayer groups were studied by participant observation and by interviewing key members. These data show that testimony (or witnessing) is the central commitment mechanism. Although glossolalia may serve as a symbol of commitment, testimony is a greater commitment mechanism since it incl…
Not All Alternatives Are Complementary
An Interpretive Comparison of Elements of the Pentecostal and Underground Church Movements in American Catholicism
The underground church and the Catholic pentecostal movement are very different from each other in the substance of their dissent from the rest of the church and society, yet both group-movements are both middle-class in their appeal—thus defying standard sociological explanations based on social and economic deprivation. This comparative study attempts to find and interpret the differences between the underground church movement and the pentecos…

Similar Events, Different Approaches: Reply to Harrison
I find myself in general agreement with Harrison's comments (see previous article, this issue) and feel confident that most of his criticisms of my article Testimony as a Commitment Mechanism in Catholic Pentecostal Prayer Groups (1977) would have been obviated had my original manuscript been printed without revision and massive cutting. In reply to his specific criticisms: 1. Glossolalia is frequently viewed by religious researchers as anomalous…
