Field of Flows: Therapeutic Culture and Roman Catholic Women’s Lived Religious Practices
This article examines the relationship between religion and therapeutic culture, focusing on the practices of Roman Catholic women in Poland. Its aim is to understand how flows between these domains reshape individual and communal religious practices. The study draws on qualitative research and employs a practice-oriented lived religion approach as the theoretical framework. Data was collected through individual in-depth interviews ( n = 48) with…
A canopy of umbrellas: Building religious belonging through practices in online settings
Mediatisation affects most areas of social life, also transforming religious practices. The main objective of the article is to consider how religious belonging is produced and sustained in online settings by practices, both integrating and boundary-making ones. Drawing inspiration from a praxeological lived religion approach, I treat religious belonging as an outcome of practising and identification with a community of ‘practising-like-us’. Base…
Religion Lived In-Between: Time, Space, and Religious Practices of Roman Catholic Women in Poland
The article focuses on the role of time and space in the religious practices of Roman Catholic women. It aims to demonstrate not only how the spatial-temporal conditions of everyday life shape religious practices, but also how the space and time for practicing religion are produced as a result of practices. The article also shows how religious and other practices compete for limited spatial-temporal resources, contributing to the transformation o…
Widoczna i niewidoczna religia.
They lived happily ever after'? Practices of sustaining the durability of Roman Catholic marriage in the context of transformations in intimacy in late modernity
Although in late-modern societies the idea of a 'forever' relationship has lost its dominant status, it is consistently upheld by the Roman Catholic Church. The aim of the article is to analyse the practices of sustaining the durability of Catholic marriage, which we treat as ways of adapting to the tensions between late-modern models of intimacy and the rule of indissolubility of marriage. We refer to data collected in qualitative research among…
Between Online Autonomy and Local Constraints: Spaces of Roman Catholic Women's Activity in Poland
The analysis presented in this article shows how a hybrid community combining online and offline activity generates a semi-autonomous space of women's activity, neither fully independent of the religious institution, nor entirely controlled by it. Based on results obtained over 15 months of qualitative research conducted in the Captivating (Urzekająca), conservative community of Roman Catholic women in Poland, I show that digital environments are…
