  • A Roboticist’s Guide to the Engineering Ethics of Job Automation

    Open Access•Matthew Marshall•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2023

There is concern about robots taking people’s jobs. Advances in automation risk bringing material and psychological harm to workers, so it is important to study the ethics of this engineering discipline. Existing work focuses on either policy to ameliorate workers’ income loss or the effects of losing agency. What is missing is a guide to help automation engineers and roboticists evaluate their moral responsibilities. This article addresses that …

  • The varved succession of Crawford Lake, Milton, Ontario, Canada as a candidate Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point for the Anthropocene series

    Open Access•Francine Mg Mccarthy, Robert T Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2023•Cited by: 17•References: 41

An annually laminated succession in Crawford Lake, Ontario, Canada is proposed for the Global boundary Stratotype Section and Point (GSSP) to define the Anthropocene as a series/epoch with a base dated at 1950 CE. Varve couplets of organic matter capped by calcite precipitated each summer in alkaline surface waters reflect environmental change at global to local scales. Spheroidal carbonaceous particles and nitrogen isotopes record an increase in…

  • Siliceous algae response to the “Great Acceleration” of the mid-20th century in Crawford Lake (Ontario, Canada)

Open Access•Cale Ac Gushulak, Matthew Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•The Anthropocene Review•2021•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Diatom and chrysophyte assemblages from varved sediments of meromictic Crawford Lake, Ontario record major environmental changes resulting from spatially broadening anthropogenic environmental stressors related to the “Great Acceleration” in the mid-20th century. Biannual assessment of diatom and chrysophyte assemblages over the last ~200 years allowed for rate of change analysis between adjacent samples that increased substantially during the mi…

  • Adapting Experiential Learning to Develop Problem-Solving Skills in Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Engineering Students

Matthew Marshall, Matthew M Marshall et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2016

Individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professions, and this may be due in part to their level of preparation in the development and retention of mathematical and problem-solving skills. An approach was developed that incorporates experiential learning and best practices of STEM instruction to give first-year DHH students enrolled in a postsecondary STEM …
