Diatoms in a sediment core from a flood pulse wetland in Malaysia record strong responses to human impacts and hydro‐climate over the past 150 years
Rapid development and climate change in southeast Asia is placing unprecedented pressures on freshwater ecosystems, but long term records of the ecological consequences are rare. Here we examine one basin of Tasik Chini (Malaysia), a UNESCO‐designated flood pulse wetland, where human disturbances (dam installation, iron ore mining, oil palm and rubber cultivation) have escalated since the 1980s. Diatom analysis and organic matter geochemistry (δ …
First human impacts and responses of aquatic systems
Lake sediments constitute natural archives of past environmental changes. Historically, research has focused mainly on generating regional climate records, but records of human impacts caused by land use and exploitation of freshwater resources are now attracting scientific and management interests. Long-term environmental records are useful to establish ecosystem reference conditions, enabling comparisons with current environments and potentiall…
Evidence for cyclic drought in the crater lakes of western Victoria, south-eastern Australia during the last 2000 years
Expressions of climate perturbations and cultural impacts in western Uganda during the last 1000 years using quantitative indicators
Diatom and stable isotope records of late-Holocene lake ontogeny at Indrepollen, Lofoten, NW Norway
Borg Indrepollen is a coastal lake on the island of Vestvågøy, Lofoten, NW Norway. A sedimentary sequence spanning the last 4500 cal. yr BP was analysed for diatom, C/N and stable isotopes (δ 13 C and δ 15 N). The record provides clear evidence of glacio-isostatic rebound in the Lofoten region. Five distinct lithostratigraphic-geochemical zones (I—V) and four major diatom zones (A—D) were identified. The early record (I—III, A—Biii; 4500—550 cal.…
The gloomy forebodings of this dread disease', climate, famine and sleeping sickness in East Africa
Identifying the nature of the association between climate, environmental, socio-economic and political context and disease remains a major challenge, yet a better comprehension of the linkages is imperative if predictive models to guide public health responses are to be devised. Our understanding of the relationships could be improved through investigations of historical epidemics. In this paper we draw on a range of published and unpublished doc…
