The Importance of Listening to Mud
Mud is one of the most commonplace substances, but it defies attempts to describe it. Mud can be thought of as an archive in miniature, holding secrets about environmental change in deep time. This essay asks what we might be able to learn if we could listen to mud, to give voice to the history locked in its murky matrix. With examples from the arts and science, it explores mud as an environmental archive with the potential to provide rich, multi…
Beheaded, Burnt, and Buried
In 2022, two successive excavation campaigns by the Egyptian-German mission focused on the area surrounding the museum of Matariya, which collects the monumental pieces discovered on the archaeological site of Heliopolis around the obelisk of Senusret I. These excavations unearthed the massive limestone block foundations of a Late Period temple, as well as a limestone pavement that once covered the temple forecourt. A preserved part of this pavem…
Living on the edge
Extensive research carried out during the last 30 years in the lowermost foothills of the Southern Pyrenees has revealed the significance of this area for studying Neanderthal lifestyle and settlement histories in the Iberian Peninsula. With a large number of cave and rock shelter sites, broad-ranging chronologies, and relatively well-known sedimentation rates and environmental conditions, this enclave continues to improve our knowledge about Nea…
European colonization and the emergence of novel fire regimes in southeast Australia
The rapid increase in severe wildfires in many parts of the world, especially in temperate systems, requires urgent attention to reduce fires' catastrophic impacts on human lives, livelihoods, health and economy. Of particular concern is southeast Australia, which harbours one of the most flammable vegetation types on Earth. While previous studies suggest climate and European activities drove changes in southeast Australian fire regimes in the la…
A quantitative synthesis of Holocene vegetation change in Nigeria (Western Africa)
Understanding long-term (centennial–millennial scale) ecosystem stability and dynamics are key to sustainable management and conservation of ecosystem processes under the currently changing climate. Fossil pollen records offer the possibility to investigate long-term changes in vegetation composition and diversity on regional and continental scales. Such studies have been conducted in temperate systems, but are underrepresented in the tropics, es…
« Ramessiser » des statues
The attention Egypt paid to images, along all phases of its history, was so great that traces of manipulation, modification, mutilation or even destruction can be noticed on most representations that have reached us. A single statue could thus go through several successive ‘ lives.’ A proof of the material, symbolic and possibly ideologico-political importance of statues in ancient Egypt is the practice of re-use, sometimes referred to as ‘ usurp…
Tanis (2019)
Pollen and plant diversity relationships in a Mediterranean montane area
From Bab el-Nasr to Matariya
In Autumn 2018, the decision was taken to remove two quartzite sphinxes from a modern reconstruction of a postern next to Bab el-Nasr, Cairo. The two statues were thus moved to the open-air museum of Matariya, where they were most probably standing in the first place, on the site of the ancient Heliopolis. This article intends to provide documentation concerning the journey of these two pieces that await to be published. They represent key pieces…
Humans take control of fire-driven diversity changes in Mediterranean Iberia’s vegetation during the mid–late Holocene
Fire regime changes are considered a major threat to future biodiversity in the Mediterranean Basin. Such predictions remain uncertain, given that fire regime changes and their ecological impacts occur over timescales that are too long for direct observation. Here we analyse centennial- and millennial-scale shifts in fire regimes and compositional turnover to track the consequences of fire regime shifts on Mediterranean vegetation diversity. We e…

Holocene sea level and climate interactions on wet dune slack evolution in SW Portugal
We examine the Holocene environmental changes in a wet dune slack of the Portuguese coast, Poço do Barbarroxa de Baixo. Lithology, organic matter, biological proxies and high-resolution chronology provide estimations of sediment accumulation rates and changes in environmental conditions in relation to sea-level change and climate variability during the Holocene. Results show that the wet dune slack was formed 7.5 cal. ka BP, contemporaneous with …

Paleoenvironmental evolution of the Guadiana Estuary, Portugal, during the Holocene
In this paper, we reconstruct the Holocene paleoenvironmental evolution of the Guadiana Estuary, southwestern Iberian Peninsula. Two previously studied boreholes (CM3 and CM5) were revisited and analyzed in the light of a foraminifera modern analog approach. Cluster analyses define four assemblages with different biocenotic, taphonomic, elevation and distance-to-sea settings, which serve as a baseline for paleoassemblages interpretation. Faunal c…
‘Put the Statues in the Oven’
Identifying the material used to carve a statue is particularly significant. A sculpture might appear to be of a hard, prestigious stone, requiring a laborious process of manufacture, while actually be of a soft, more affordable stone. A large part of the corpus of sculptures of the Late Middle Kingdom and the Second Intermediate Period is made from a peculiar stone: steatite, also called soapstone or talc. Its specific characteristics allowed sc…

Environmental context of the Kura-Araxes culture

Pollen and plant diversity relationships in a Mediterranean montane area
A 5600-yr history of changing vegetation, sea levels and human impacts from the Black Sea coast of Georgia
Mid-late Holocene pollen evidence from the Ispani-II Sphagnum bog in lowland Western Georgia shows that 4500 years ago Castanea (chestnut)-dominated woods rapidly declined to be replaced by alder swamps and, later, during the first millennium bc, by open, marshy landscapes in which fire played a prominent part. Around 1900 years ago, Sphagnum blanket bog encroached on the marshes and dense Fagus-Carpinus (beech-hornbeam) forest enveloped the surr…
