Uneven Counting: The Legal Economy of Death, Sacrifice, and Compassion in Pakistan
Drawn from research conducted with the families of child victims of a terrorist attack (on Army Public School) in Pakistan, this paper examines how these victim families make sense of contingencies of loss, suffering, and victimhood in their struggle for equal compensation and benefits of care and compassion. Inadequacies of the current agriculture and food systems are recognised globally in the form of damages to environment and human health. State, gender and the life of colonial laws: The hijras/khwajasaras' history of dispossession and their demand for dignity and izzat in Pakistan
This article critically assesses the notion of dignity used in recent Supreme Court judgments on ‘third gender’ and ‘transgender rights’ in South Asia, and suggests a reexamination of dignity as the basis for demanding justice for historical wrongs. Tracing the constitutional genealogy of the idea, I suggest that dignity has a distinctively European philosophical and legal origin. This paper gives an overview of the value of ecosystem services of 10 main biomes expressed in monetary units. In total, over 320 publications were screened covering over 300 case study locations. Approximately 1350 value estimates were coded and stored in a searchable Ecosystem Service Value Database (ESVD). A selection of 665 value estimates was used for the analysis.
