Association between sleep, sunlight exposure, and multimorbidity in older adults with and without mental illness
Background: Light exposure and sleep are closely related to many chronic conditions. However, the associations between light exposure, sleep, and multimorbidity have been less well characterized, particularly in older adults with and without mental illness. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in two representative areas in Northwest China. Core sleep parameters, sleep-related symptoms, and sunlight exposure were collected using self-re…
Impact of pharmaceutical intervention on the use of intravenous antibiotics in patients with bacterial upper respiratory tract infections
Background: Overuse of antibiotics among patients with upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) is a worldwide problem. In China, approximately 70% of outpatients with URTIs are treated with antibiotics, often via intravenous infusion. This study aimed to evaluate whether a pharmacist-led multidimensional intervention reduces the use of intravenous (IV) antibacterial drug infusion among patients with bacterial URTIs. Methods and analysis: This …
Validity and reliability of the sleep health index among community-dwelling older adults
Background Sleep health represents a positive and multidimensional framework that extends beyond the absence of sleep disturbances or insufficient sleep duration. Despite its clinical relevance, empirical research on sleep health in older adults remains limited. The Sleep Health Index (SHI) was developed to comprehensively evaluate sleep health. This study aimed to validate the Chinese version of the SHI among community-dwelling older adults. Met…
Association between green space exposure and elderly health
Exposure to green spaces is associated with many health benefits across various stages of life. However, no comprehensive synthesis currently exists to consolidate this evidence into a systematic body of knowledge that captures the overall impact of exposure to green space on the health of older adults. This systematic review seeks to address this gap by generating a thorough, integrated evidence base and offering valuable insights for future res…

Forensic psychiatric evaluation practices and regulations vary significantly across jurisdictions, offering comparative analysis opportunities. This paper compares the forensic psychiatric evaluation processes in China and Italy, emphatically examining and analyzing …
The impact of marriage on life satisfaction trajectories during emerging adulthood
Holocene aeolian-fluvial interactions patterns and their response to climate changes in the Paiku Co basin, Southern Tibetan Plateau
Aeolian-fluvial processes are crucial in shaping landforms. Despite the advancements in understanding the sedimentary processes of aeolian-fluvial interactions, the sedimentary patterns of these interactions are complex in spatiotemporal scale, and the records of Holocene small-scale aeolian-fluvial interaction sedimentary is insufficient, especially in the Tibetan Plateau region. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the sedimentary pattern…
Incidence of cognitive impairment after hypothetical interventions on depression, nighttime sleep duration, and leisure activity engagement among older Chinese adults
Background: Cognitive impairment is an age-relevant intermediate stage where cognition declines to a state between the normal aging process and dementia. Earlier studies reported that depression, inappropriate nighttime sleep duration (NSD), and limited leisure activity engagement are cognitive impairment risk factors among older adults. Thus, we postulated that interventions on depression, sleep duration, and leisure activity engagement can redu…

Financial repression, SOE reform and fiscal-monetary policy coordination
We build a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model with financial repression and conduct estimation and simulation with it using aggregate data. We discuss the interaction and optimal combination of fiscal and monetary policies when the model features SOE monopoly and financial repression. We find that under current situation, fiscal policy should play a bigger role in stabilizing output, while monetary policy ought to pay more attent…
Assessment of Influencing Factors on the Spatial Variability of SOM in the Red Beds of the Nanxiong Basin of China, Using GIS and Geo-Statistical Methods
Understanding the spatial variability of soil organic matter (SOM) is crucial for implementing precise land degradation control and fertilization to improve crop productivity. Studying spatial variability provides a scientific basis for precision fertilization and land degradation control. In this study, geostatistics and classical statistical methods were used to analyze the spatial variability of SOM and its influencing factors under various de…
The Gene-Edited Babies Controversy in China
The concept of field philosophy challenges a common self-understanding in Western philosophy. One question regarding this challenge is the extent to which it might be relevant to a philosophical and cultural tradition other than that in which it originated. The birth of gene-edited babies in late 2018 in Shenzhen and subsequent response within China offer an occasion for considering such a question. A narrative review, emphasizing how discussions…
Not Some Other -ism”—On Some Western Marxist Misrepresentations of Chinese Socialism
This study tackles four Western Marxist misrepresentations of socialism with Chinese characteristics, particularly as it has developed with the reform and opening-up. Each of these misrepresentations sets in opposition the economy and the state, with the former being seen as “capitalist” (in some form) and the latter as variously “authoritarian,” “bureaucratic” or simply as “interventionist.” In other words, “Chinese characteristics” designates t…
Business fixed investment of Chinese manufacturing firms in the post-financial crisis era
I document the investment decline of Chinese manufacturing firms after 2011, following the end of the 4 trillion fiscal stimulus program and expansionary monetary policies for combating the 2008–2009 financial crisis. I employ a difference-in-difference strategy to show that state-owned enterprises (SOEs) acted as investment stabilizers. In the post-crisis era, SOEs’ investment rates fell less compared to their private counterparts. Moreover, the…

Taiwan has one of the lowest fertility rates in Asia. High direct and indirect costs of childbearing have been identified as key drivers behind this at the macro-level, but little is known about the mechanism of these influences at the individual-level. In 32 qualitative interviews with parents in Taipei, we sought to explore the salient factors for couples in their decisions about having further children. We identified a tension between gendered…
Costly Labour Adjustment
This article studies the employment and productivity implications of new Chinese labour regulations. We estimate a general equilibrium model of costly labour adjustment from data prior to the policy to study the effects of the interventions. Increases in severance payments are particularly effective and lead to sizable private sector responses. If in place at the time, these frictions would have reduced China's annual growth rate by nearly 1 perc…
Coresidence with elderly parents and female labor supply in China
The female labor force participation rate in China has experienced a significant decline over the past two decades. Existing studies attribute this decline to the retreat of government protection of female employment and growing gender discrimination in th
What did China’s labor contract law do to its private manufacturing firms
Well-intended employment protection legislation may have adverse consequences. This paper uses Chinese firm-level data to assess the impacts of China’s Labor Contract Law, effective on January 1, 2008. My results show that, relative to public firms, private firms as a whole were negatively affected in terms of firm-level year-to-year employment changes. The law had negligible effects on employment and wages in firms with high wages. At the same t…

Modelling the evolution of drug resistance in the presence of antiviral drugs
Some of the issues related to drug resistance in HIV and pandemic influenza can possibly be addressed using existing mathematical models, with a special focus on linking the existing models to the data obtained through the Canadian HIV Strain and DR Surveillance Program. Preliminary statistical analysis of these data carried out at PHAC, together with the general model framework developed by Dr. Blower and her collaborators, should provide furthe…
