  • Maternal Life Satisfaction and Child Development from Toddlerhood to Adolescence

Open Access•Nabanita Datta Gupta, Jonas Jessen et al.•ARTICLE•Review of Economics of the…•2026

We analyse how maternal life satisfaction impacts child development at different ages from toddlerhood to adolescence. Using the German Socio-Economic Panel, which captures maternal life satisfaction and various age-specific measures of child development, we identify a strong positive association between mothers’ life satisfaction and their children’s development when these are toddlers (2-3 years), of primary school age (5-10 years) and in adole…

  • Parental Leave, Worker Substitutability and Firms’ Employment

Open Access•Mathias Huebener, Jonas Jessen et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024

    Open Access•Jonas Jessen, Sophia Schmitz et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024•Cited by: 4•References: 56

These migrants grew up with high rates of maternal employment, whereas West German families mostly followed the traditional breadwinner-housewife model. We find that West German women increase their labour supply and that this holds within households. We provide ad…

  • Centre‐Based Care and Parenting Activities

Open Access•Jonas Jessen, Christa Katharina Spieß et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2022

We examine the relationship between parenting activities and centre‐based care using time diary and survey data for mothers in Germany. While mothers using centre‐based care spend significantly less time in the presence of their child, we find that differences in the time spent on specific activities such as reading, talking, and playing with the child are relatively small or zero. The pattern of results is more pronounced for lower education mot…
