  • Economics and the Covid Pandemic in the UK

Keith Hartley•ARTICLE•Peace Economics Peace Science and…•2020

Covid is a virus which has been dominated by medical experts offering different views on its causes and treatments. But the virus has economic dimensions which need to be explored. Specifically, trade-offs arise between population safety and prosperity. Protecting the population from the virus required the economy to be closed leading to job losses, plant closures and poverty for some groups in society

  • Microeconomic Policy

    Clem Tisdell, Keith Hartley•BOOK•Microeconomic Policy•2008

This thoroughly accessible textbook shows students how microeconomic theory can be used and applied to major issues of public policy. In this way, it will improve their understanding of both microeconomic theory and policy and also develop their ability to critically assess them. Clem Tisdell and Keith Hartley have expanded upon their previous successful work on microeconomics. As a result, this new book is considerably updated with substantial c…

  • The economics of UK nuclear weapons policy

    Open Access•Keith Hartley•ARTICLE•International Affairs•2006•Cited by: 1

The Trident replacement decision has an economic aspect that cannot be ignored, namely, its costs. This article presents a cost-benefit framework for assessing the replacement decision and its alternatives. The replacement decision is presented against the background of the defence economics problem showing the opportunities for substitution and the need for difficult defence choices in a world of uncertainty. A framework for choices is outlined …

Previous proposals from the literature are reviewed, especially proposals for economic specialization based on comparative advantage applied to both armed forces and defence industries in a military alliance. European Union (EU) defence policy is …

  • Economics of Alliances

Tod Sandler, Todd Sandler et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Literature•2001

This essay provides an up-to-date summary of the findings of the literature on the economics of alliances. We show that the study of the economics of alliances has played a pivotal role in understanding and applying public good analysis to real-world applications. We establish that the manner in which alliances address burden sharing and allocative issues is related to strategic doctrines, weapon technology, perceived threats, and membership comp…

Prompted by the Single European Market initiative, virtually all public procurement, except for defence equipment, is now subject to European Union rules which prohibit discriminatory (buy national) purchasing policies. NATO is facing major changes and challenges: enlargement, new threats, new missions, new technology, and declining defence budgets. These developments raise the question of who will pay for the changes and hence the possibility of new burden-sharing debates. burden-sharing was a focus of controversy in the past and it could re-emerge in the future. A variety of burden-sharing measures are reviewed. These range from such traditional indicators as …
