  • The joy of the teaching track: Learning and Teaching in Politics and International Studies

Open Access•Cathy Elliott, Ellen Watts et al.•ARTICLE•Politics•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 35

In recent years, the number of academic jobs in research-intensive universities that are described as ‘academic education route’, ‘teaching and scholarship’, or ‘teaching track’ has grown. While some of these jobs emerged out of the regularisation of formerly casual posts, we have also witnessed the creation of specialised education-focused roles and academic promotion frameworks that offer education-focused career paths. In this article, a group…

  • Charting brain functional development from birth to 6 years of age

Open Access•Weiyan Yin, Tengfei Li et al.•ARTICLE•Nature Human Behaviour•2025•References: 98

Early childhood is crucial for brain functional development. Using advanced neuroimaging methods, characterizing functional connectivity has shed light on the developmental process in infants. However, insights into spatiotemporal functional maturation from birth to early childhood are substantially lacking. In this study, we aggregated 1,091 resting-state functional MRI scans of typically developing children from birth to 6 years of age, harmoni…

  • Recollecting a lost dialogue: Structural Realism meets neoclassical realism

    Open Access•Keith Smith•ARTICLE•International Relations•2019

Since its appellation, much work has sought to consolidate neoclassical realism. Specifically, a number of variations on the neoclassical theme have reconceptualised the third-image and carved out a distinctly European neoclassical variant. This article contributes by recollecting the Structural Realism of Logic of Anarchy. In unpacking Structural Realism's framework and dissecting its engagement with inter alia Kenneth Waltz, this article illust…

  • The realism that did not speak its name: E. H. Carr’s diplomatic histories of the twenty years’ crisis

    Open Access•Keith Smith•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 44

    E. H. Carr was one of Europe’s pre-eminent thinkers in the field of international affairs. Yet his contribution to International Relations theory is continually questioned. Realists depict Carr as a quintessential realist; revisionists draw from his wider corpus to qualify his contribution. Although not inaccurate, the revisionist literature is incomplete as it neglects a number of Carr’s diplomatic histories. Refocusing on these, especially the …

  • Gender Differences in Environmental Concern: Reevaluating Gender Socialization

    Noel Strapko, Lynn Hempel et al.•ARTICLE•Society & Natural Resources•2016•Cited by: 13•References: 16

We examine the direct effects of social roles and value orientations believed to be derived from gender socialization on environmental concern. Using structural equation modeling (SEM) and Wave 2 of the Baylor Religion Survey (BRS), we find that among U.S. adults, value orientations about social roles, but not social roles themselves, influence environmental concern. Gender traditionalism is found to have a significant negative relationship with …

  • Realist Foreign Policy Analysis with a Twist: The Persian Gulf Security Complex and the Rise and Fall of Dual Containment

    Open Access•Keith Smith•ARTICLE•Foreign Policy Analysis•2014•References: 24

Analyses of US post-Cold War foreign policy in the Persian Gulf symbolize realism's new found concern with foreign policy analysis. Prominent realists attribute specific policies to domestic concerns and how they have dominated policymaking in the era of US primacy. Although convincing, this perspective is not comprehensive. By drawing on regional security complex theory, it is possible to map the regional developments that have equally constrain…

  • Why Just Two Parties? A Voting Game to Illustrate Duverger's Law

    Open Access•Keith Smith•ARTICLE•PS Political Science & Politics•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 5

With the 2012 presidential elections approaching, student interest in (and frustration with) the US two-party system is likely to grow. Although many explanations exist for this phenomenon, their number and complexity often overwhelm students. This article describes an iterative game, designed for a single class session, that illustrates one of the major institutional explanations for the US two-party system—Duverger's Law. The game can also spur…

  • VII. Empire's Law

William Cornish, Michael Lobban et al.•CHAPTER•The Oxford History of the Laws of…•2010

This chapter aims to note how both the essential constitutional doctrines and the major rules of private law could fare in the process of adapting the common law to its novel environments; for, among other things, that suggests the extent to which English common law was dependent upon its own circumstances of time and socio-political development.

  • Congressional Use of Authorization and Oversight

    Keith Smith, Keith W Smith•ARTICLE•Congress & the Presidency•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 17

This article addresses two questions found in the transaction-cost literature on congressional control of the federal bureaucracy. The first question is, when does Congress seek to exercise control over federal agencies? Drawing in part on the work of Ringquist, Worsham, and Eisner (2003) and Cox (2004), this project examines congressional use of statutory controls and oversight across different levels of public salience, technical complexity, an…

Keith Smith•CHAPTER•The Oxford handbook of innovation•2009

It is sometimes suggested that it is inherently impossible to quantify and measure innovation. This article argues that while this is true for some aspects of innovation, its overall characteristics do not preclude measurement of key dimensions of processes and outputs. An important development has been the emergence of new indicators of innovation inputs and outputs, including economy-wide measures that have some degree of international comparab…

The authors argue that race should once again be central to anthropological inquiry, that cultural and physical anthropologists must jointly develop and publicly disseminate a unified, uniquely anthropological perspective.
