  • Increasing women’s empowerment

Open Access•Kate Ambler, Kelly Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2025•References: 13

We conduct a randomized controlled trial to test a novel intervention for increasing women’s empowerment in Uganda. The intervention includes a within-household transfer of a productive asset, which has a lower cost than an external transfer. We find that transferring control of some of the household’s sugarcane to the wife significantly increases her access to resources and decision-making power. We also document increases in women’s empowerment…

  • Perceived changes in social-ecological resilience in fire-prone ecosystems in Colorado

Open Access•Alyson Cheney, Kelly Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2024

Assessing resilience of wildfire-prone social-ecological systems (SES) can provide a baseline for decision makers and inform future management actions. In this study, we measure stakeholder perceptions of how SES resilience was influenced by historic 2020-wildfire events in northern Colorado and what actions they think are needed to enhance future resilience to wildfire. We developed a contextualized set of resilience principles and indicators ba…

Open Access•Mary Rozga, Kelly Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2021

Objective: The objective of this scoping review was to examine the research question: In the adults with or without cardiometabolic risk, what is the availability of literature examining interventions to improve or maintain nutrition and physical activity-related outcomes? Sub-topics included: (1) behaviour counseling or coaching from a dietitian/nutritionist or exercise practitioner, (2) mobile applications to improve nutrition and physical acti…

  • Improving food safety on the farm

    Open Access•Vivian Hoffmann, Kelly Jones•ARTICLE•World Development•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Evidence is emerging that foodborne illness accounts for a staggering health burden in developing countries. However, standard approaches used by developed country governments to ensure food safety are not appropriate in settings where regulatory enforcement capacity is weak and most firms are small and informal. Using a randomized field experiment, we test the impacts of subsidies and a price premium for safer produce on farmer adoption of techn…

  • Health-related quality of life after traumatic brain injury

Open Access•Daphne Voormolen, Suzanne Polinder et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2020

By transforming the QOLIBRI-OS into utility scores, we enabled the application in economic evaluations and in summary measures of population health, which may be used to inform decision-makers on the best interventions and strategies for TBI patients

  • Facilitating women’s access to an economic empowerment initiative

    Open Access•Kate Ambler, Kelly Jones et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 7

We study the take‐up of an intervention designed to increase women’s economic empowerment among sugarcane farmers in Uganda. We find that lower socioeconomic status and household gender norms both predict a couple’s refusal of the intervention. We also randomly assign couples to a workshop that aims to increase communication and gender balance in the household and find that couples invited to the workshop were less likely to refuse the subsequent…

  • Associations between brain drawings following mild traumatic brain injury and negative illness perceptions and post-concussion symptoms at 4 years

    Open Access•Kelly Jones, Kelly M Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2019•References: 39

Characteristics of patient's drawings have been linked to short-term health-related outcomes across a range of health conditions. This study examined associations between brain drawings at 1 month and illness perceptions and post-concussion symptoms at 4 years in 92 adults following mild traumatic brain injury. Greater damage depicted at 1 month was correlated with perceived greater impact on life, duration of injury, symptoms of brain injury, em…

  • Learning From One’s Mistakes

    Joelle C Ruthig, Kelly Jones et al.•ARTICLE•Social Psychology•2017•References: 2

Optimistic performance estimates tend to diminish as performance and feedback draw near, yet it is unclear what contributes to subsequent performance estimates after feedback. At multiple time points, 166 undergraduates estimated their performance on two exams within a course, which was then compared to their actual exam scores. Along with assessing accuracy and shifts in estimates as performance and feedback drew near, the current study explored…

  • Concurrently examining unrealistic absolute and comparative optimism

    Open Access•Joelle C Ruthig, Bradlee W Gamblin et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•2017•References: 35

Researchers have spent considerable effort examining unrealistic absolute optimism and unrealistic comparative optimism, yet there is a lack of research exploring them concurrently. This longitudinal study repeatedly assessed unrealistic absolute and comparative optimism within a performance context over several months to identify the degree to which they shift as a function of proximity to performance and performance feedback, their associations…

  • Does self‐efficacy mediate the effect of oral health literacy on self‐rated oral health in an Indigenous population

Open Access•Kelly Jones, David S Brennan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2016

Given that SE is a construct amenable to change, our results suggest that interventions that aim to improve SE may have positive impacts on SROH among this vulnerable population

  • Using Agriculture to Improve Child Health

    Open Access•Kelly Jones, Kelly M Jones et al.•ARTICLE•World Development•2015•Cited by: 5

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is prevalent throughout the developing world, and causes night blindness and increases child morbidity and mortality. We studied the health benefits of biofortification in reducing VAD, using a cluster-randomized impact evaluation in 36 villages in northern Mozambique. Based on a sample of 1,321 observations of children under the age 5, biofortification reduced diarrhea prevalence by 11.4 percentage points (95% CI 2.0–2…

  • Income Shocks and HIV in Africa

    Open Access•Meghan Burke, Marshall Burke et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2015•Cited by: 23•References: 65

We examine how variation in local economic conditions has shaped the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Using data from over 200,000 individuals across 19 countries, we match biomarker data on individuals' serostatus to information on local rainfall shocks, a large source of income variation for rural households. We estimate infection rates in HIV‐endemic rural areas increase by 11% for every recent drought, an effect that is statistically and economically…

  • Contraceptive Supply and Fertility Outcomes

    Kelly Jones, Kelly M Jones•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 31

Total fertility rates in sub-Saharan Africa are nearly double that of any other region in the world. Some argue that providing contraceptives has only a negligibly small impact on fertility. I exploit exogenous, temporary reductions in contraceptive supply in Ghana, resulting from cuts in US funding, to examine impacts on pregnancy, abortion, and births. Women are unable to fully compensate for the 10%–16% supply reduction using traditional metho…

  • Serum aflatoxin B 1 -lysine adduct level in adult women from Eastern Province in Kenya depends on household socio-economic status

  • Growing Up Together

    Open Access•Kelly Jones, Kelly M Jones•ARTICLE•Demography•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 37

In sub-Saharan Africa, 60 % of child deaths are preventable by investments in child health as simple as immunizations, bed nets, or water purification. This article investigates how a household’s decisions regarding such investments are affected by the size and gender composition of a child’s cohort. I focus on a previously overlooked type of investment: nonrival, child-specific goods (club goods). I empirically estimate the response of immunizat…

  • Attitudes and experiences of restaurateurs regarding smoking bans in Adelaide, South Australia

Kelly Jones, Michael Wakefield et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•1999

The VCP made an insignificant contribution to adoption of non-smoking policies, and compliance with the code was poor. Despite concerns about loss of business, there was considerable support for legislation which would ban smoking in all dining establishments
