  • “Russian body and soul”

    Dana Heller•CHAPTER•Song for Europe•2017

This chapter considers t.A.T.u&s;.s Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) performance as a productive flashpoint of East-West misreading and failed translation that might account for the duo&s;s very different reception in Russia and the West. It also highlights some of the ways in which post-Soviet appropriations of international pop styles wittingly or unwittingly mock the moral pieties and hypocrisy of Western democratic societies while coyly assertin…

  • Visibility and Its Discontents

Dana Heller•ARTICLE•GLQ A Journal of Lesbian and Gay…•2011

This review essay considers three recent publications that collectively demonstrate developments in queer television studies. According to the author, these works provide circumspect progress narratives, tempered by awareness that LGBTQ visibility does not exist in any historical congruity with LGBTQ social and political realities. Taken together, these publications suggest that LGBTQ studies and television studies can make odd bedmates, as schol…

  • Contradiction as a Form of Contractual Incompleteness

    Open Access•Dana Heller, Ran Spiegler•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 7

A simple model is presented, in which contradictory instructions \nare viewed as a type of contract incompleteness. The model provides \na complexity-based rationale for contradictory instructions. If there \nare complexity bounds on the contract, there may be an incentive to \nintroduce contradictions, leaving for another agent the task of interpreting them. The optimal amount of contradictions depends on the \ncomplexity bound, the conflict of …

With the explosion of reality television onto screens and schedules worldwide, this timely and original book explores makeover tv, the ubiquitous reality format that has received little critical attention to date. • T.A.T.u. You! Russia, the global politics of Eurovision, and lesbian pop

    Open Access•Dana Heller•ARTICLE•Popular Music•2007

The author argues that the success of the Russian pop duo, t.A.T.u., and in particular their participation in the 2003 Eurovision Song Contest, is revealing of the multiple and contradictory ways in which Russia is currently engaging with concepts of the national and the international. Specifically, the essay considers t.A.T.u.’s performance of faux-lesbian pop eroticism as a productive flashpoint of East-West misreading and failed translation th…

    Dana Heller•ARTICLE•Comparative American Studies An…•2005•References: 6

This article examines images of Russians in Hollywood film from 1939 to 1990, with a focus on romantic narratives depicting Russians and Americans in love. The article traces a pattern of attachment to Russia as a trope that helps reveal the changing and contradictory contours of American myths of nationhood. The author argues that films such as Ninotchka, Moscow on the Hudson and The Russia House refashion such myths by rhetorically orchestratin…

  • How many lesbians does it take to screw in a light bulb

    Janet Bing, Dana Heller•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2003•Cited by: 5•References: 2

This paper explores how humor reveals shared aspects of a culture of lesbian communities in the US. For lesbians, jokes and other forms of humor are an active, narrative means of self-construction and community imagining that help lesbians negotiate their positions both inside and outside mainstream culture. Whether consciously or unconsciously, much of lesbian humor challenges the dominant culture by rejecting its definitions of and presuppositi…

    Dana Heller•ARTICLE•Journal of Popular Film and…•2003•Cited by: 6•References: 1

The author examines the problem of adapting the situation comedy to the post-Soviet Russian cultural idiom. She considers the advantages of a historically informed approach to understanding television format adaptation. Moreover, she argues that the future of transnational television genres will be determined by cultural memory, which takes shape alongside attachments to history and engagements with changing local forms of everyday life

  • Found Footage

Through analyzing the trope of discovery of documented images and voices of the feminist past, the essay shows how hist…
