Tackling barriers to collective action for effective vaccination campaigns
Vaccine-based protection in populations that are vulnerable to infectious diseases represents a public good, whose successful attainment requires collective action. We investigated participation in mass domestic dog vaccination against dog-mediated human rabies endemic in Tanzania as a prototypical example of these issues. We employed advertising interventions, text messaging and/or engagement through community leaders, as well as operational adj…
Sex Workers, Stigma, and Self-Image
This paper studies the link between self-image and behavior among those who face stigma due to poverty and social exclusion. Using a randomized field experiment with sex workers in Kolkata (India), we examine whether a psychological intervention to mitigate adverse effects of internalized stigma can induce behavior change. We find significant improvements in participants' self-image, their savings choices, and health clinic visits. Administrative…
Self‐Fulfilling Mistakes
This article incorporates self‐fulfilling mistakes into an otherwise classical decision‐making framework. A behavioural agent makes a mistake when he fails to internalise all the consequences of his actions on himself. We show that Sen’s axioms α and γ fully characterise choice data consistent with behavioural agents. These two axioms are weaker than Sen’s axioms α and β that fully characterise rational agents. We offer a welfare benchmark that c…
Poverty and Aspirations Failure
We develop a theoretical framework to study the psychology of poverty and ‘aspirations failure’, defined as the failure to aspire to one's own potential. In our framework, rich and the poor persons share the same preferences and same behavioural bias in setting aspirations. We show that poverty can exacerbate the effects of this behavioural bias leading to aspirations failure and hence, a behavioural poverty trap. Aspirations failure is a consequ…
Anonymity, Efficiency Wages and Technological Progress
Decentralised exchange, out-of-equilibrium dynamics and convergence to efficiency
Complementarity with complete but P-acyclic preferences
Co‐ordination Failure, Moral Hazard and Sovereign Bankruptcy Procedures
We study a model of sovereign debt crisis that combines problems of creditor coordination and debtor moral hazard. Solving the sovereign debtor's incentives leads to excessive 'rollover failure' by creditors when sovereign default occurs. We discuss how the incidence of crises might be reduced by international sovereign bankruptcy procedures and relate this to the current debate on revising international financial architecture. Paper prepared for…
From the Counting House to the Modern Office
The United States overtook Britain in comparative aggregate productivity levels primarily as a result of trends in services rather than trends in industry. This occurred during the transition from customized, low-volume, high-margin business organized on the basis of networks to standardized, high-volume, low-margin business with hierarchical management from the 1870s. This transformation from the counting house to the modern office was dependent…
