Open Access•Margaret Quinn Rosenzweig, Andrew D Althouse et al.•ARTICLE•Health Equity•2021

Background: This analysis describes associations between area deprivation and patient-reported outcomes among patients with advanced cancer. Methods: This is a cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from a multisite primary palliative care intervention trial. Participants were adult patients with advanced cancer. Patient-level area deprivation scores were calculated using the Area Deprivation Index (ADI). Quality of life and symptom burden wer…

  • The Value of Teaching Critical Race Theory in Prison Spaces

Open Access•Amos J Lee, Michael Harrell et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities•2020

This paper seeks to address the value of a humanities-based education, specifically focusing on a critical race theory course taught within a prison classroom. The perspectives shared are from three incarcerated students as well as their course instructor regarding the continued debate over whether vocational or academic courses are more beneficial in prison spaces. The case for vocational training has always been supported. Yet, the value of aca…

  • Exploring the Impacts of Ballot Box Land Use Measures on Affordable Housing

Lucy Acquaye, Joana Macedo et al.•ARTICLE•Housing and Society•2007

Throughout the U.S., increasing land use regulation via ballot box measures is being addressed. It appears that ballot box land use measures to pass land use regulation change can lead to delays in the land development process. These delays have been found to increase transaction costs, cause uncertainty in the development process, and lead to a reduction in the number of new single-unit homes being constructed. One of the major concerns is that …

  • Weaknesses in Current Measures of Housing Needs

    William O’Dell, Marc T Smith et al.•ARTICLE•Housing and Society•2004•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Defining housing affordability presents issues in measurement that have implications for housing policy. Measures of housing affordability are generally based on assumptions on what should be paid for housing. In establishing standards in this way, as in the 30% of income standard used with HUD programs, a single measure is imposed on an entire population and the most severe needs requiring intervention may be missed. Differences may exist across…

  • Assessing the Impact of Integrated Natural Resource Management

Open Access•María Verónica Gottret, Douglas White et al.•ARTICLE•Conservation Ecology•2002

Assessing the impact of integrated natural resource management (INRM) research poses a challenge to scientists. The complexity of INRM interventions requires a more holistic approach to impact assessment, beyond the plot and farm levels and beyond traditional analysis of economic returns. Impact assessment for INRM combines the traditional "what" and "where" factors of economic and environmental priorities with newer "who" and "how" aspects of so…

This collection of articles aims at revitalizing the study of kinship and exchange in a social network perspective. It brings together studies of empirical systems of marriage and descent with investigations of the flow of material resources in societies of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Europe. Restudies of classic ethnographic cases and fieldwork studies of kinship and exchange demonstrate how the social and material aspects of society are relat…
