  • Women in office

Open Access•Veronica Frisancho, Evi Pappa et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Political…•2026•References: 47

Gender-based violence in the U.S. is a silent epidemic. Twenty percent of women experience rape, yet only one in three reports it. Using FBI data and a regression discontinuity design, we examine the impact of female U.S. House Representatives on reported rapes and femicides. Our findings suggest an increase in reporting, rather than higher levels of violence. Our setting and additional analysis allow us to rule out policy channels. We argue that…

  • Chronicle of A War Foretold

    Open Access•Nadav Ben Zeev, Evi Pappa•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2017•Cited by: 7•References: 24

We identify news shocks to US defence spending as the shocks that best explain future movements in defence spending over a five‐year horizon and are orthogonal to current defence spending. Our identified shocks, though correlated with the Ramey (2011) news shocks, explain a larger share of macroeconomic fluctuations and produce significant demand effects. News about increases in defence spending induces significant and persistent increases in out…

  • The Structural Dynamics of Output Growth and Inflation

    Open Access•Fabio Canova, Luca Gambetti et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 17

We examine the dynamics of output growth and inflation in the US, Euro area and UK using a structural time varying coefficient VAR. There are important similarities in structural inflation dynamics across countries; output growth dynamics differ. Swings in the magnitude of inflation and output growth volatilities and persistences are accounted for by a combination of three structural shocks. Changes over time in the structure of the economy are l…

  • Price Differentials in Monetary Unions

    Open Access•Fabio Canova, Evi Pappa•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 11

We study the effect of regional expenditure and revenue shocks on price differentials for 47 US states and 9 EU countries. We identify shocks using sign restrictions on the dynamics of expenditures, revenues, deficits and output and construct two estimates for structural price differentials dynamics, one for the average and one for each unit, which optimally weight information contained in the data for all units. On average, expansionary fiscal d…
