Ecological rationality and economics
Over the past decades psychological theories have made significant headway into economics, culminating in the 2002 (partially) and 2017 Nobel prizes awarded for work in the field of Behavioral Economics. Many of the insights imported from psychology into economics share a common trait: the presumption that decision makers use shortcuts that lead to deviations from rational behaviour (the Heuristics-and-Biases program). Many economists seem unawar…
Retirement Savings
© 2017 Royal Economic Society (Registered Charity No. 231508). This study develops a structural dynamic life-cycle model to examine the behavior of members of an industry-wide pension fund to assess both the prevalence of defaults and their impact on retirement savings. We estimate the model using the simulated method of moments on administrative data from a large Australian pension fund. Our results show that default settings strongly influence …
Do Donors Care About the Price of Giving? A Review of the Evidence, with Some Theory to Organise It
We study how donors decide about which charity to give to. To this end, we construct a theoretical model that clarifies the conditions under which the stand-alone benefit from giving, the charity price (i.e. the fundraising expenditure and overhead costs claimed by the charity providing services), and the information cost (i.e. the cost of information acquisition) inform giving decisions. We define the price of giving as the sum total of charity …
Group incentives or individual incentives? A real-effort weak-link experiment
Floris Heukelom, Behavioral Economics. A History
Behavioral Economics (BE) is everywhere these days. See for example the World Development Report 2015 (World Bank Group 2014) that takes an unabashedly partisan BE perspective to reflect on mind, society, and behavior; or see the “Behavioral Insights teams” or “nudge units”, often located near the pinnacle of power, that have popped up all over the world. Google them. As characterized by Camerer and Loewenstein, “[b]ehavioral economics increases …

Voluntary Regulation of NGOs and Nonprofits
How can nonprofit organizations and NGOs demonstrate accountability to stakeholders and show that they are using funds appropriately and delivering on their promises? Many nonprofit stakeholders, including funders and regulators, have few opportunities to observe nonprofit internal management and policies. Such information deficits make it difficult for 'principals' to differentiate credible nonprofits from less credible ones. This volume examine…

An Austrian (Mis)Reads Adam Smith
Thought Before Adam Smith is notable for its villification of 'the quiet Scottish professor.' While there is little disagreement that Smith was at best an ambivalent champion of free markets, Rothbard's indictment of him as a proto-Marxist is less than persuasive. We argue that Rothbard's book suffers from logical flaws, selective and incomplete textual evidence, a misunderstanding of Das Adam Smith Problem and the relevant literature, and an una…
Experimental practices in economics
This target article is concerned with the implications of the surprisingly different experimental practices in economics and in areas of psychology relevant to both economists and psychologists, such as behavioral decision making. We consider four features of experimentation in economics, namely, script enactment, repeated trials, performance-based monetary payments, and the proscription against deception, and compare them to experimental practic…

Trust, repute and the role of non-profit enterprise
This article examines the trust hypothesis: the claim that asymmetric information can explain the existence of non-profit enterprise in certain markets. We argue that this hypothesis, in order to be viable, has to meet three challenges: ‘reputational ubiquity’, ‘incentive compatibility’ and ‘adulteration’. Drawing on modern agency theory, we conclude that the trust hypothesis stands on shaky ground. It can be sustained only under particular condi…
Self-Command in Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments
Building on an analysis of Adam Smith's enumeration of five classes of passions, we show that self-command in his Theory of Moral Sentiments (TMS) can be modeled as a game whose structure is identical to endogenous quality or reputation models. While acknowledging Smith's views on the evolutive nature of the general rules of morality (as well as the individual's understanding of them), we take the general rules as given. Within the game's framewo…
