  • Assessing the impact of an increase in the minimum wage on household income and poverty

    Open Access•José M Arranz, Carlos García Serrano•ARTICLE•Social Science Research•2025•References: 30

Using repeated cross-section individual and household data and the propensity score difference-in-differences (DID) technique, this article investigates the impact of minimum wage hikes on family income and poverty. To do so, it focuses on the large increase in the minimum wage that occurred in Spain in January 2019 (21.6% in real terms). Our descriptive analysis show that minimum wage earners are more concentrated in households with lower income…

Using microdata from the European Union Labour Force Survey (EU‐LFS) and aggregate indicators of labour market institutions, this article compares the job quality of native and non‐native workers across European countries and analyses the impact of the institutional settings on the job quality differential between both groups. The LFS is used to measure a job quality index for the period 2005–2017. We find that some immigrant groups fare worse th…

  • The effectiveness of minimum income benefits in poverty reduction in Spain

    Open Access•Linda Ayala, José M Arranz et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2020•Cited by: 8•References: 3

One of the greatest peculiarities of the Spanish system of minimum income benefits is its complex organisation. There is a wide variety of specific means‐tested benefits whose management and financing depend on the central government. They are designed to protect different contingencies, providing very different levels of protection. On the other hand, the general risk of poverty is covered by regional governments without any coordination and fin…

This article aims to examine in depth the work trajectories of individuals over time, in order to provide a wider perspective of the employment history of immigrants compared to native people, by gender and for more than one decade (2005–2017) in Spain. We use microdata (cohort and multivariate analysis) from the Labour Force Survey and carry out a comparison for three groups: the Spanish born in Spain, the Spanish born abroad, and the non‐Spanis…

Using a detailed survey on Spanish workers, this paper investigates the relationship between firm size and working conditions, the extent to which firm size differences in workers' job satisfaction can be accounted for by differences in their work environment and the impact of firm size on workers' quit intentions. The results indicate that: (1) employees in larger firms face a worse work environment; (2) working in large firms significantly redu…

  • Drawing Lessons from the Boom of Temporary Jobs in Spain

    Open Access•Juan J Dolado, Carlos García Serrano et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2002•Cited by: 33•References: 13

We review some lessons from the Spanish experience of using temporary employment contracts for regular jobs since 1984. The focus is on the role of fixed--term contracts with low severance pay, which have substituted for reform of employment protection legislation for permanent contracts. We consider the main findings about this reform on the Spanish labour market in the light of the main theoretical implications derived from models dealing with …

  • Job Tenure and Job Mobility in Britain

    Open Access•Alison L Booth, Marco Francesconi et al.•ARTICLE•Industrial and Labor Relations…•1999•Cited by: 14•References: 33

Using work-history data from the British Household Panel Survey, the authors examine job mobility and job tenure over the period 1915-90. British men and women held an average of five jobs over the course of their work lives, and half of all lifetime job changes occurred in the first ten years. Separation hazards were higher for more recent cohorts, implying an increase in job instability. As jobs accumulated, average tenure lengthened, but the p…
