  • Cannabis Use and Sexual Identity Exploration in Emerging Adulthood: A Call for Inclusive, Trauma-Informed Campus Mental Health Strategies

Fayaz Ahmad Paul, Abhijeet Singh et al.•ARTICLE•Substance Use & Misuse•2026

Emerging adulthood is a transformative phase characterized by identity exploration, risk-taking, and evolving social roles. Among LGBTQ+ university students, the convergence of sexual identity development and cannabis use can intensify vulnerability to depression, anxiety, and maladaptive coping, as explained by minority stress and self-medication theories. This commentary explores the multifaceted links between stigma, substance use, and campus …

  • The productivity of public and private preschools (and schools): Evidence from India

Open Access•Petter Berg, Mauricio Romero et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025

We study the relative productivity of private and public institutions at the preschool and primary school levels using panel data from 215 villages in Tamil Nadu. Private preschools show higher test score value-added in math and language (∼0.59 − 0.74σ) and outperform government providers in nearly all villages. This productivity difference explains 60% of the socioeconomic test score gap before school entry. These results contrast starkly with p…

  • Improving Administrative Data at Scale: Experimental Evidence on Digital Testing in Indian Schools

    Open Access•Abhijeet Singh•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Large-scale student assessments are a cornerstone of proposed educational reforms to improve student achievement from very low levels in low- and middle-income countries. Yet, this promise relies on their presumed reliability. I use direct audit evidence from a large Indian state (Andhra Pradesh) to show that, as currently administered, official learning assessments substantially overstate proficiency and understate the ‘learning crisis’ of low s…

  • Efficacy evaluation of newly isolated zinc solubilizing bacteria for their potential effect on maize ( Zea mays L.) under zinc deficient soil conditions

Open Access•Aradhana Sukhwal, Devendra Jain et al.•ARTICLE•Land Degradation and Development•2023

Zinc solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) induces the conversion of fixed and unavailable soil zinc to readily available zinc contributes plant zinc nutrition and fortification. The present research intended to determine the screening of plant growth‐promoting (PGP) traits of potent ZSB, biochemical and molecular characterization of ZSB, and assessment of potent ZSB for crop yield at the field level. Therefore, in the present study, molecular and function…

  • Disrupting Education? Experimental Evidence on Technology-Aided Instruction in India

Karthik Muralidharan, Abhijeet Singh et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Review•2019

We study the impact of a personalized technology-aided after-school instruction program in middle-school grades in urban India using a lottery that provided winners with free access to the program. Lottery winners scored 0.37 σ higher in math and 0.23 σ higher in Hindi over just a 4.5-month period. IV estimates suggest that attending the program for 90 days would increase math and Hindi test scores by 0.6 σ and 0.39 σ respectively. We find simila…

  • Disparities in children’s vocabulary and height in relation to household wealth and parental schooling: A longitudinal study in four low- and middle-income countries

    Open Access•Sarah Anne Reynolds, C Andersen et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2017

Children from low socio-economic status (SES) households often demonstrate worse growth and developmental outcomes than wealthier children, in part because poor children face a broader range of risk factors. It is difficult to characterize the trajectories of SES disparities in low- and middle-income countries because longitudinal data are infrequently available. We analyze measures of children's linear growth (height) at ages 1, 5, 8 and 12y and…

Despite the popularity of school meals as interventions in education, little evidence exists on \ntheir effect on health outcomes. This study uses newly available longitudinal data from the \nState of Andhra Pradesh in India to assess the impact of the introduction of a national \nmidday meal programme on the anthropometric z-scores of primary school students, and \ninvestigates whether the programme had any impact on ameliorating the deteriorati…
