Open Access•D Bos, David J Bos et al.•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•2016

Introduction to a double thematic issue, the second part of which will appear in print in 2017. The authors argue that a truly historical understanding of spirituality is complicated by the historical claims of present-day proponents of spirituality, as well by the commonplace that “spirituality” is distinct from, or an alternative to “institutional religion.” This conceptual opposition itself merits scholarly analysis, as do appropriations of th…

  • The Mystical Body Falling Apart

    Open Access•Gerard Rouwhorst•ARTICLE•Religion and Theology•2016

This article deals with some important changes that occurred in the ritual of the Eucharist and its theological interpretation between Late Antiquity and the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. These had been studied especially by Henri de Lubac in his book Corpus Mysticum . It is quite common – especially among liturgical historians – to present these processes in a purely negatively light and to interpret them in terms of liturgical decline and d…

  • Le Noyau le Plus Ancien des Hymnes de la Collection 'Sur L'Epiphanie' et la Question de Leur Authenticité

    Gerard Rouwhorst•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•2012

The authenticity of the madrashe/hymns contained in the collection On Epiphany, which is traditionally ascribed to Ephrem the Syrian, is considered as doubtful by most scholars. One of the major arguments advanced against Ephrem's authorship is the fact that the collection presupposes the existence of the feast of Epiphany commemorating Jesus' baptism on 6 January, with which Ephrem certainly was not familiar. This, however, does not exclude the …

  • Ascetic Eucharists. Food and Drink in Early Christian Ritual Meals

Gerard Rouwhorst, Addie Mcgowan et al.•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•2001

The early Eucharist has usually been seen as sacramental eating of token bread and wine in careful or even slavish imitation of Jesus and his earliest disciples. In fact the evidence suggests great diversity in its conduct, including the use of foods, in the first few hundred years. Eucharistic meals involving cheese, milk, salt, oil, and vegetables are attested, and some have argued that even fish was used. The most significant exception to usin…
