Cruel optimism’: Teacher attachment to professionalism in an era of performativity
This study provides a critical exploration of the way teachers’ attachment to notions of professionalism may facilitate a process whereby teachers find themselves obliged to enact centralised and local education policies that they do not believe in but are required to implement. The study argues that professionalism involves an entanglement of (past) occupational and (present) organisational discourses and that the remainders of the former facili…

Huele de Noche—Night Blooming Jasmine: Santa Clara del Cobre, Michoacán, México Directed by Michele Feder‐Nadoff
2005 , 33 minutes, color. Distributed by CUENTOS Foundation , 6321 N. Clark St., Chicago, IL 60660 , http://www.cuentosfoundation.org This “poetic documentary” is an elegy to coppersmithing and the town of Santa Clara in the hills of Michoacán overlooking the Patzcuaro Basin. Its intention is to instill reverence and nostalgia for an idyllic way of life. As such, Huele de Noche succeeds, for its images are compelling, its music evocative. The poe…

Teaching, school management and the ideology of Pragmatism
With reference to Bernstein's theories concerning the pulls and tensions of competing pedagogic identities, this article draws on original research to suggest that a culture of pragmatism may be currently rooting itself in English schools. This culture is understood partly as an instrumental response to rapid and extensive educational reform, and partly as the internalization of a wider discourse of pragmatism in which pragmatism itself is concei…
The Good Teacher: Dominant Discourses in Teacher Education
Moore's insightful text explores and makes better sense of professional practice by examining that practice in the context of popular views. The book identifies and elaborates three dominant discourses of good teaching: * the competent craftsperson, currently favoured by central governments* the reflective practitioner, which continues to get widespread support among teacher trainers and educators* the charismatic subject, whose popular appeal is…
Compliance, Resistance and Pragmatism: The (re)construction of schoolteacher identities in a period of intensive educational reform
Drawing on empirical research, this article explores the ways in which schoolteachers ‘reposition’ themselves in the face of rapid and extensive educational change, some of which they may view with ambivalence or hostility. Arguing that local responses to public policy are prompting teachers to become increasingly pragmatic in their philosophies and practice, the article identifies and illustrates two distinct forms of pragmatism: ‘principled pra…

Conspiration and « Lone Nuts »: Inevitable Adjuncts to Bloodshed in American Politics
Masking the Fissure: Some Thoughts on Competences, Reflection and 'Closure' in Initial Teacher Education
A profile of teacher competences is described and interrogated in the light of inherent, language‐based problematics. It is argued that such texts tend to constrain the modes and parameters within which to think about one's practice, in addition to masking possible deficiences in education systems through a pathologisation of the individual practitioner. The importance of keeping alive alternative discourses is stressed. Such discourses, it is ar…

Feasting as occupation: The emergence of ritual from everyday activities
Timothy Asch's justly famous ethnographic film, The Feast, made with Napoleon Chagnon, represents the forging of an alliance between two formerly mutually hostile villages of Yanomami tribesmen in the Venezuelan rain forest. The event is readily analyzed according to a rite of passage model. By referring to print ethnographies one can also analyze the action depicted in terms of the transmutation that ritual events effect upon everyday activities…

Basilicas and King Posts: A proxemic and symbolic event analysis of competing public architecture among the San Blas Cuna
The inauguration of a modern, syncretic, basilica-style congress house in a Cuna community sparked an attempt to revive a traditional Cuna congress house. These complementary events are analyzed not only to reveal the political alliances behind this cultural oscillation, but to contrast the proxemics of the Western basilica (which elevates authority) with the Cuna congress house (which encloses and symbolizes authority). A further comparison of t…

From Council to Legislature: Democracy, Parliamentarianism, and the San Blas Cuna
An exposition of the Cuna general congress's procedures, compared to local congress's and the Panamanian legislature's, discloses a tendency toward Western parliamentarianism, a folk conflict model originating in England. Anthropologists have good models for conflict; political scientists have other models for consent. Panama's assembly is shown to be a support structure rather than a demand one. Finally, recommendations are made for using formal…

Thomas Bee's Notes on the State of South Carolina
Francis Marbois, secretary of the French diplomatic legation at Philadelphia in the 1780s, compiled the most famous questionnaire in early American history. His twenty-two questions on the natural history, geography, commerce, and political institutions of the states of the newly formed United States prompted Thomas Jefferson to write Notes on the State of Virginia.' While the historical fame of Marbois' questionnaire justly rests upon Jefferson'…
